Uncharitable Thought

Intellectually, I am thrilled ereaders were such a popular gift. It will only increase the number of digital books sold, which will help normalize the pricing.

BUT I CAN'T DO A SEARCH ON CHICAGO PUBLIC LIBRARY EBOOK WEB SITE. I swear, that little circle has been going round and round for 30 minutes - I just want to find out if they have a book. But all these new ereaders are clogging up the servers! They need to read their backlist of pbooks, and stay off the CPL site!

Last book read: The Slap, by Christos Tsiolkas. Currently reading Odd Thomas, by Dean Koontz

I honestly don't think that's what it is - there can't be that many new users all of a sudden?

It is frustrating. I got a notice this morning that a book I was on the Wait list for is available - and I haven't been able to get the blasted Library Overdrive site to work all day to download it.

I don't know what it up. I guess it could be all the new eReaders.

For what it is worth the State Library of Tasmania, which uses Overdrive for its ebook library, is have trouble with Overdrive - it won't let users sign in. Is it possible that it's an Overdrive problem and not a local library problem?

Regards, Alex

Well, apparently the Free Library of Philadelphia had a similar problem. Maybe it's an Overdrive problem, as Alex suggests, but maybe they were just not geared up for the rush to ebook readers this Christmas.

It is, indeed, a system-wide Overdrive problem.

I can't believe there were that many people who received (non-Kindle) readers, who rushed to their computers to borrow library books?

Yes, I do hope, but the CPL is acting up again - took 15 minutes to log in and check out the book I had on hold. But once I checked it out, I got itimmediately. So I am happy, because this means our digital libraries will grow, but I don't want to wait. I just want to place something from my wish list on hold, but the little circle is going, and going, and going . . .
