Vancouver island Library is now lending out Kobo E-readers. What's your opinion?

That's....pretty awesome, actually. Is the library's collection of ebooks good as well?

Very good, you download books from the BC online library plus Vancouver Island is on the Overdrive advantage list so we get the most books out of all BC.

Mmmmmm............ sounds OK.
That sounds interesting - you pay a rental for the reader, presumably ?
And pay same for books ? The nearest I think we have in UK in some libraries is the ready-loaded "Clipper" audiobook series - a preloaded device with the cover book on it, unabridged mainly. Quite good, small and convenient, and miles better than the old cassette plus 27 tapes if it was a long one ! Course, we can just d/load stuff onto our readers [well, some]. Sadly, I can't see much in the way of innovation in our libraries in the near future - just hanging onto them is the big push at the moment..... |

No you don't have to pay, it's just like checking out a book. Except you break it you buy it, along with the Case ($30), USB ($10), and manual ($2 )

Well you load them up with books from the online Library. But I think this will lead to more piracy than loans. But it also gives the people who are thinking of buying one a chance to try one out.

Why would this lead to more piracy?

BC Libraries has one of the largest ebook collections in the world with over 11,000 titles. By way of contrast, the Free Library of Philadelphia has just under 7,000 titles.

You need a BC Library card. And what reader are you talking about?
