kobo or kindle or other... any thoughts?

I am wondering about the kobo vs the kindle or any of the other electronic "book readers". I don't own any cell phones or other mobile devices and I am a pc user.
I appreciate any input.
Thanks

I have a Sony which uses ePub format same as the Kobo and really like it. An advantage of ePub is that you can borrow eBooks from local libraries on line. Don't know if you can with the Kindle

Welcome! :-)

What are your computer skills like? If I said to you, download a program from <imaginary link>, install it, then plug in your reader via usb - how confident would you be in following the instructions, on a scale of 1 to 10?

What country are you in? If Australia, are you in a major city? Good mobile coverage with all providers?

Generally, if you're not at all confident on a computer AND have good mobile access in your area, I'd recommend a 3G Kindle. Partly because you won't NEED to use the computer much, if at all, to buy or load your ebooks.

If you're fairly confident on a computer, consider a Kobo or Sony, or a Kindle Wifi. These both require a program called Adobe Digital Editions on your computer to unlock any ebooks with DRM (digital rights management) on them. That makes them more difficult for some folk to use.

I hope that helps.

Welcome to MR. I'd personally suggest the new Kindle 3. Right now it seems to offer the best compromise of features vs. price. However, the Kobo will allow you to easily borrow ebooks from your local library, if your library offers them. For some people that's a big plus. Amazon has the biggest and best ebook store which was a big draw for me.

Electronic "book readers" are like freckled armpits, not everyone has one, but everyone who does has an opinion.

For eink, I prefer Sony. Good quality and epub format.
