Is there any news of a Kindle release for Canada ? I was really expecting this to be before the Europe release. Although Europe will be a bigger market, I would have thought the wireless requirement would have been easier to achieve within one country rather than negotiating in the many countries of Europe.
Maybe Amazon are looking at a wifi version for Kindle 2 which could then be sold across North America, rather than just the US.

I don't think they can do a Canada release without French can they?

Maybe McDonalds will become the new gathering place for those with an interest in literature. We can sit back on a grimy plastic chair, sip on a watered down diet coke and relax as we try to avoid getting grease stains on our expensive leather covers

My bet is that their developing a combined CDMA/GSM Version which they could use worldwide. The Kindle is due for a refresh soon as after all its already been out for a year.

Think about it. They need GSM (GPRS/EDGE/UMTS/HSDPA) for Europe, South America,Africa, The Middl East and Most of Asia.

However they still need CDMA support for North America (Where GSM coverage is comparatively limited), Korea & Japan.

With the new mobile chips (think from Qualcomm) which allow you to have both CDMA as well as GSM on the same chip, it makes sense to make one standard product.

Sure, but many phone models, Moto Razr for example have both a CDMA version and a GSM version. There is no need to put both radios in the same device. Of course, if they could do it then it would make inventory control and manufacturing a bit easier.

BOb

They do, but they also have the volume that they can afford to do different production runs. And most phones are produced in hundreds of thousands if not millions.

And as much as I love e-book's and readers, I doubt they are going to reach the production numbers of even the least popular phones for a while.

The main difficulty they may run into may be getting clearance from the FCC and equivalents, but then again if they use the Qualcomm chip, its probably not that difficult. Qualcomm started marketing them in laptops as Gobi, allowing you to use whichever network is available.

Cool... guess you meant "Gobi".

Anyway... perhaps the Kindle already uses this chip? Anyone know what radio chip Kindle uses?
