New 3-chip platform for next-gen handhelds

Skyworks Solutions of Woburn, Massachusetts has introduced the Lynx L9100, a 3-chip solution for next-gen multimedia wireless handhelds, with features that include a high-resolution camera interface, MP3, and MPEG capabilities.

Technical Details

Skyworks' Lynx(TM) complete system solution incorporates a multimedia framework that delivers next-generation functionality and services on a single ARM 9 core architecture. The multimedia playback engine supports a number of audio (MIDI 64-tone, XMF, MP3, WMA, AAC, AMR), still image (JPEG, GIF), video (MPEG, H.263, H.264), and 2-D/3-D graphics formats. With an integrated multi-megapixel camera interface and on-chip image signal processing (ISP), Lynx is able to process and encode high-resolution still image (JPEG) and video (3GPP and MP4) formats. Multiple peripheral interfaces are supported including USB 2.0 OTG, MMC/SD, IrDA, and Bluetooth. The platform comes pre-integrated with Java JTWI 1.0, and supports a number of JSRs and other data services.

The L9100 represents the first system in the platform series and provides 2 megapixel camera plus ISP, USB 2.0 OTG, MMC/SD, and IrDA interfaces, along with support for Bluetooth, GPS, Wi-Fi and other peripherals. The Lynx(TM) L9100 is available now and currently sampling to qualified customers worldwide.

According to the Skyworks Solutions website, they currently supply OEMs including Motorola, Nokia, Samsung and Sony/Ericsson as well as emerging ODMs and contract manufacturers such as BenQ, Chi Mei, Compal, Flextronics and Quanta.

If I understood correctly, this chip would supplement regular CPUs such as the Intel XScale, right? In other words, it'd be similar to the Intel 2700 multimedia chip of the Axim X50v. Though the Intel chip doesn't support H.264/MP4, nor some of the other newer compression codecs you quoted here. Judging from the success of the X50v due to its multimedia chip, it seems very likely to me that this Lynx chip is going to make waves in the mobile world very soon.
