Memory usage

Is Calibre supposed to use so much memory, 700MB and counting?

I just left Calibre up along with my computer for 8 days.

No. calibre memory usage should fluctuate between about 130MB and 250MB depending on what covers you have cached.

Is 2.9G starting memory acceptable?

My calibre 2.17.0/debian testing uses 2.9G of virtual memory right after start. I find this unacceptable. I've got 4300 books in the library, surely I don't need almost 1M per book. Is there a way to reduce this?

Well, it isn't calibre's fault. My ArchLinux laptop only has 2GB RAM, and calibre runs smoothly alongside Firefox with ~170 tabs.

VM usage on Ubuntu or Mint (32bit 2G RAM) rarely gets off the peg (unlike Windows on the same hardware)
