Unterhaltsam finde ich das Buch auch- wenngleich es mich nicht vom Hocker reißt. Abseits des eigentlichen Inhaltes finde ich es jedoch sehr amüsant, das Buch auch unter dem Aspekt zu lesen, dass Poe's Zeitgenossen Vieles als Tatsachenbericht gelesen haben.
Möglicherweise kommt mir zudem zugute, dass ich vorher ein Reisetagebuch aus dem Jahr 1842 und Reise-"Briefe" aus dem Jahr 1844 gelesen habe, wenn auch mit ganz anderer Thematik
Solche Bücher waren damals wohl einzigartige Informationsquellen und ich frage mich, inwieweit Poe genau damit spielte/die Leute auf den Arm nahm.

Je länger ich lese (ich habe ungefähr die Hälfte durch), desto besser gefällt es mir. Noch bin ich mir nicht klar, ob ich mich einfach nur darauf eingelassen habe oder ob die Handlung tatsächlich "dichter" wird. Immerhin frage ich mich inzwischen, was als Nächstes geschieht - und diese Frage habe ich mir anfangs sicher nicht gestellt

Ich habe über'n Mittag noch etwas weiter gelesen. Nach der Lektüre der Kapitel 6 bis 8 ist mir nun endlich klar, wieso David Weber so sehr zu Info-Dumps neigt. Der ärmste hat ganz offenbar in seiner Kindheit zu viel Pym gelesen und bleibende Schäden davongetragen. Min Jung', es ist mir egal, wie genau die Ladung in Segelschiffen verstaut werden muss, damit sie nicht umherpoltert, das musst Du echt nicht seitenweise ausführen! Komm' doch mal bitte auf den Punkt, welch selbiger einfach ist, dass dies hier unterlassen wurde.

*kopfschüttel* Was mache ich nicht alles für euch. Möge sich aber bitte hinterher keiner beschweren, wenn ich demnächst des öfteren für ein paar tausend Worte am Stück über ein Thema meiner Wahl digressiere...

Insgesamt fand ich dann das Ende schon wieder originell, die Phase nach der

Ich muss dann mal schauen,ob es zum Roman Kommentare aus der Zeit oder vom Autor selber gibt. Es fällt mir immer etwas schwer den Text richtig einzuordnen, d.h. was wurde zu der Zeit geschrieben und war bekannt. Vielleicht ist der gesamte Text origineller für die Zeit als wir es heute einordnen würden. Generell fällt das Fehlen direkter Rede auf, das würde heute sicherlich anders geschrieben werden.

Ich fand es jetzt insgesamt keine verschwendete Zeit, wenn ich es auch ohne Buchclub in der Früphase beiseite gelegt hätte.

Ich bin gespannt auf eure Kommentare!

Es gibt auch auf Wikipedia einen eigenen Artikel zum Buch. hier

Das ist aber wirklich erst nach der Lektüre zu empfehlen.

Die Deutung finde ich aber fast überinterpretiert. Ich habe das Ganze eher als humorigen Episodenroman verstanden, der verkleidet als Tatsachenbericht daher kommt. Da der Roman gestückelt in einer Zeitschrift erschien, kann man dann durchaus verstehen, wenn einige das am Anfang für eine reale Geschichte gehalten haben.

Gestern Abend habe ich es nun auch begonnen und bin in der Zwischenzeit vielleicht mit einem Viertel durch. Mich erinnert es vom Gefühl her sehr an Sindbad den Seefahrer, aber ich bin mir nicht sicher ob es wegen der Sprache ist (ich lese die deutsche Übersetzung), wegen der Schiffsfahrt oder wegen der Stimmung ganz allgemein.
Bisher empfinde ich es als angenehme Unterhaltung - nicht superspannend (meine Aussteigehaltestelle werde ich bei der S-Bahn-Fahrt damit sicher nicht verpassen ) aber eine Quälerei ist es auch nicht. Das Gothic-Element habe ich für mich noch nicht entdeckt, aber kann ja alles noch kommen.

Die Reiseberichte/briefe, die ich gelesen hatte, wurden ja ungefähr zur gleichen Zeit wie "Pym" geschrieben. Keine Dialoge, oft sehr distanzierte Berichterstattung, teilweise seeeehr ausführliche Beschreibungen... Mitte des 19.Jh. waren solche Berichte sicherlich sehr spannend, weil Reisen in ein weit entferntes Land vielleicht für die meisten Menschen so "exotisch" waren wie heute unsere Vorstellung von einer Reise ins All.

Guter Punkt! Deshalb vielleicht auch die Textpassagen über das Brüten der Albatrosse und Pinguine und die Berichte über die Entdeckungsreisen.

Also die Info-Einschübe, die Gudy so liebt.

Hier muss ich aber leider auch sagen, nötig waren diese nicht unbedingt und sie passen überhaupt nicht in die Handlung. Allenfalls bieten sie einen Kontrast zum Ende.

Ausführlichen Kommentar werde ich nach dem Lesen geben.
Ich möchte nur sagen, dass das Lesen mich vor dem Schlaf auf dem Bett sehr entspannt.
Ich finde es schon unterhaltsam und emfehle es für alle, die etwas leichtes und interessantes in der Winternacht lesen wollen.

Es gibt immer wieder Bücher, bei denen ich Passagen "überfliege", weil sie mich nicht interessieren oder sie mir einfach zu langatmig sind. Das war für mich z.B. auch bei "Contact" so. In Poe's Zeit haben vielleicht die Leute diese Info-Einschübe gerne gelesen, die heute eine Tier-Doku im Fernsehen anschauen

P.S. Der von dir verlinkte Wikipedia-Artikel scheibt dazu auch Einiges unter "Entstehungsgeschichte"
Dennoch überforderte das gewählte Format den Kurzgeschichtenautor, weshalb er, um das angestrebte Volumen zu erreichen, Exkurse nautischer, geografischer und biologischer Art einfügte und damit die von seinem Zeitgenossen Herman Melville in Moby Dick angewandte und vielgerühmte Struktur vorwegnahm.

Genau. Ich habe nichts gegen den einen oder anderen Einschub, wenn er denn passt - ich schaue mir ja schließlich auch die eine oder andere Tier-Doku an. :-P Ich kann mir auch vorstellen, dass die in diesem Thread bereits angedrohten Passagen über Albatrosse und Pinguine darunter fallen. Aber die Sache mit der Schiffsladung und ähnliche Einschübe waren so irrelevant und - zumindest für mich - langweilig und deplatziert, dass ich sie schleunigst überblättert habe.

Ich finde das auch, Spinni. Gestern war ich dabei sogar so entspannt, dass ich eingeschlafen bin. War aber auch schon spät. Oder spricht das jetzt gegen das Buch.

Eindeutig. Leider kann ich weder mit einem Buch noch mit dem Reader in der Hand einschlafen, das funktioniert bei mir einfach nicht. Irgendwie mag ich im Moment nicht weiterlesen, vielleicht am Wochenende.
