Current book cover as screensaver

This would seem obvious to me, and would make a lot more sense than some random dead person. Do any of the hacks use the currently being read book cover as a screensaver?

No, and that's not easily doable, check the numerous threads in which we've discussed this .

I had this idea back in the early 50's when the Kindle first came out. Apparently it requires some sort of advance technology.

Just do the screen saver hack and only load in one picture that says 'This is the book I'm reading'

Doesn't the kindle unpack everything into memory when it opens a book?

It does as its a linux based system and its basic knowledge that whatever you are reading, should be dumped to the RAM (memory) first. However, you will have to write a program that can read each sector (or equivalent in RAM) of the memory and find out where the cover lies. I am not sure if Kindle allows anybody to have direct access to reading the RAM. Whatever other hacks are, they dont work on RAM (as far as I am aware, anyways). They work on the local storage (Hard disk equivalent) of Kindle.

One alternative can be to figure out where the kernel of the OS is assigning everything on RAM. If someone can figure out a way to read this information from the Kernel, they dont have to go to RAM and it might be doable. I know nothing of linux programming, or scripting, but Niluje is the linux guru here. Maybe he can help. (He would have already if my theory is true)..

Two approaches that should be feasible:

(1) Upon suspend, check for the existence of an image file having the same base name as the last read book (from reader.pref) but an image extension (png, gif, jpg), and if found, use that as the screen saver. (Obviously, that image has to come from somewhere, maybe from (2) below, would also have the advantage of having proper size and palette).

(2) In the currently read book, go to the cover page, make a screenshot, and have some mechanism to use this screenshot as the screen saver.

Not sure about the details, though...

Wow, good idea xiaopangzi............

High level Algorithm:
1) Screenshot the cover
2) save it somewhere
3) Create a flag for whatever screenshot belongs to the book last read
4) Upon suspend/power off use this as the screensaver

I agree it would be a great hack/mod. I do it manually at the moment, as I love opening the cover and seeing the current book image displayed as a screensaver.
