Literaturnobelpreis des Jahres 2007. Das Buch ist grandios, aber mit 800 Seiten auch sehr umfangreich. Erzähltechnisch ein Meisterwerk, wie es nur wenige im 20. Jahrhundert gegeben hat. Doris Lessing ist für mich neben Virgina Woolf die wichtigste weibliche Autorin die ich überhaupt kenne.

Die meisten davon (alle außer Bedlam Bard, Summoned to Tourney und A Host of Furious Fancies) habe ich gelesen, ja. Und ja, sie sind größtenteils sehr gut. Ich liebe Geschichten, die Musik und Magie verbinden, was ja nun bei dieser Serie wahrlich der Fall ist. Womit ich nur nichts anfangen konnte, waren die Ausflüge nach Underhill. Und insofern war das Ausmaß, in dem mir jedes einzelne Buch dieser Serie gefallen hat, mehr oder weniger umgekehrt proportional zum Anteil der Zeit, den die Charaktere Underhill verbracht haben.

Dann kann ich dir die "Spellsinger/Bannsänger" Romane von Alan Dean Foster empfehlen, Musik, Magie und ein ganz grosses Augenzwinkern.

Danke für den Tipp. Ich habe mir die Bücher mal auf Amazon angesehen, und ich kann mich des Gefühls nicht erwehren, dass ihr Humor nicht ganz... deckungsgleich mit meinem ist (was aber zugegebenermaßen auch schwierig ist) - das ganze klingt jedenfalls nach mehr Klamauk und Durch-Den-Kakao-Geziehe als ich mag.

Zurück zum Thema - ich habe gestern mit The Otherworld angefangen, der Omnibus-Edition von Wheels of Fire und When the Bough Breaks von Lackey, Lisle und Shepherd. Ich bin kein übergroßer Fan der SERRAted Edge Serie, und auch diesmal scheint es wieder, getreu der Serie, um Autorennen, missbrauchte Kinder und dunkle Kulte zu gehen. Mal sehen, ob ich trotz meiner generellen Abneigung gegenüber diesem Themenkomplex Freude an dem Buch haben werde...

Das Achtsamkeits-Buch von Halko Weiss, Michael E. Harrer und Thomas Dietz.

»Achtsamkeit im Alltag bedeutet zunächst, sich des Tempos, mit dem wir unterwegs sind, bewusst zu werden. Achtsamkeit ist wohl besonders dann angezeigt, wenn wir unter Zeitdruck stehen und hetzen.«

Dieses Ebook hat mir ein Freund (zusammen mit zwei anderen Werken) auf den Schreibtisch gelegt, was ja wohl bedeutet, dass ich es mal irgendwie zur Kenntnis nehmen soll.. Uh.. So etwas lese ich normalerweise nicht, aber ich schaue da nun brav und artig hinein. Mit 'Achtsamkeit' ist im Kontext dieses Werks eine meditative Bewusstseinshaltung gemeint, wie man sie aus buddhistisch-spirituellen Strömungen heraus kennt. Allerdings ist es anscheinend ein Anliegen dieses Buchs, den Leser möglichst wenig mit auffälliger Terminologie oder irgendwelchen historisch-wissenschaftlichen Grundlagen zu beschäftigen, es handelt sich um einen Lebenshilferatgeber auf gehobenem Niveau. Das Werk ist bestimmt für viele Leser reizvoll, ich persönlich ziehe Wilhelm Schmid vor, wenn ich schon solche Sachen lese. Aber lese das nun eben und nicht Schmid, es sind nur 200 Seiten, das schafft man schon. Und vielleicht gefällt's mir ja auch irgendwann..

Nein, nicht wirklich. Zwar hat insbesondere der zweite Teil, When the Bough Breaks durchaus seine unterhaltsamen und teilweise komischen Momente, aber so richtig mag sich das für mich nicht mit der doch recht dunkel-grausamen Grundstimmung vertragen. Dabei ist das Buch gut geschrieben und liest sich flüssig und ohne Probleme weg; einzig auffälliger Kritikpunkt ist neben den doch recht häufigen Perspektivwechseln in den Kapiteln nur eine doch arg gekünstelt wirkende Selbstreferenz in einem Buchladen, wo darauf verwiesen wird, dass es ja nun selbst von Baen schon Bücher gäbe, die Kindesmissbrauch thematisieren. Ach nee. :-(

Um bei dem Thema zu bleiben, wer sucht bei Baen eigentlich die Blurbs aus? "[This] is one of her rollicking action comedies...."?! Nee, isses nich. Der erste Teil Wheels of Fire mal so überhaupt und gar nicht, und der zweite Teil, wie oben schon angemerkt, auch nur streckenweise.

Aber die letzten vier Kapitel halte ich's nun auch noch durch, und dann ist, glaube ich, ein Genrewechsel in Richtung S/F angesagt.

Da hat wohl jemand keine gute Übersetzung für 'mindfulness' gefunden. Achtsamkeit ist für mich eher das, was der Engländer mit 'attentiveness' meint. Die Konnotationen sind bei 'mindfulness' aber ganz andere.

Nach einem längeren und leider etwas enttäuschenden (konfuse Handlung, zu viel Sex, Charaktere zu gleichartig) Ausflug zu den Werken von TechnicDragon auf storiesonline.net bin ich gestern spät Abends mit Jeffrey A. Carvers Neptune Crossing fertig geworden. So richtig weiß ich noch nicht, ob ich das Buch jetzt mag. Das Ende war vorhersehbar. Der Anfang war ein wenig spröde und machte es mir nicht einfach, in die Geschichte reinzukommen. Der Mittelteil war allerdings dafür sehr unterhaltsam und glich so zumindest den schwächelnden Anfang wieder aus. Mal sehen, wie die weiteren Teile der Serie so werden.

"The daylight war" von Peter V. Brett, dritter Teil der Warded Man Serie.

Schliesst nahtlos an die ersten beiden Bände an, spannend und flüssig geschrieben, ein guter Teil behandelt die vergangenheit von Inevera und die diversen Männlein-Weiblein Beziehungen, aber es werden auch wieder reichlich Dämonen und Menschen geschnetzelt.

Wem die ersten beiden Bände gefallen haben für den eine klare Kaufempfehlung

Teil 2, Strange Attractors ist ähnlich Teil 1, was an sich wenig überraschend ist, aber letztlich auch ein wenig enttäuschend.

Das Ganze scheint ja in der Chaos Chronicles-Serie zum Muster zu werden: Im ersten Drittel des Buches weiß keiner so recht, was eigentlich los ist. Sag' mal bitte hinterher Bescheid, wie es Dir gefallen hat.

Ansonsten bin ich gestern Abend endlich mit Jeffrey Carvers The Infinite Sea fertig geworden und habe glatt Teil 4, Sunborn, angefangen. The Infinite Sea hat mir aus der Serie bisher am besten gefallen - die Charaktere hatten mehr Raum, die Story war durchschaubarer und das Buch in seiner Gesamtheit daher fesselnder als die ersten beiden Teile.

Was ich von Teil 4 halten soll, weiß ich aber noch nicht so genau - Sonnen als intelligente Lebewesen finde ich dann doch ziemlich... gewagt. Nicht nur das, die Größe des angerissenen Konfliktes scheint mir etwas gewaltig und im wörtlichen Sinne unfassbar, aber ich lasse mich da gerne überraschen.

Habe gerade mit Enders Game angefangen, damit ich zum Filmstart am 31.10.2013 auch sicher fertig bin. Außerdem folge ich Gudy's Tipp und habe hier als nächstes schon The Machine God von MeiLin Miranda hier liegen. Gibt es auch hier zum Online-Lesen.
Auch als Kindle Edition. So oder so.
