Import Failed Errors connecting to Calibre on Touch
I made this post on Stanza's forum with no response so I want to try here also:
So I recently discovered calibre and reading online I converted my library to ePUB format for Stanza on my ipod touch 3.1.1. However, for the vast majority of my books, Stanza is giving me an "import error" message with the last sentence telling me "connection reset by peer" when connecting to calibre on my touch within my network. I can see all the titles, but most are giving me trouble downloading. I can't tell the difference between the ones that work and those that don't. The original formats for most of the ebooks where either LIT or html before conversion. Anyone familiar with this issue and how to resolve? Thanks! EDIT: I should add that my system is Windows XP Pro SP3, using Calibre 0.6.13, iTunes 9.01 (buggy!), and iPod Touch 3.1.1, Stanza Desktop beta18 and Stanza for iPod Touch 1.9.1. All ebooks stored on a shared network drive (z. Last edited by jonsarik; 09-28-2009 at 12:28 PM. |

What port do you have the Calibre server set to use? I could not get it to work reliably until I changed it 8787.
If you shared network drive is a NAS that also supports a Web Server, then you might want to look at my Calibre2Web script for allowing access in Stanza via the Online catalog facility rather than having to rely on Calibre to be running to provide this service. Changing ports had no affect as far as using the Shared Books feature of Stanza. I didn't try using the online catalog as it didn't allow me more than to see the books (download errors) before changing the port, so I don't expect a difference with the change. I'm not using a NAS, but that shouldn't matter because it still didn't work when I moved the books to my local drive.

It think I figured out why most don't work! Testing the server I notice that the few books show "% or _" between spaces of the titles, but most not working use normal space. For example:
"http://127.0.0.1:8080/get/epub/Z%20for%20Zachariah_337.epub" (works) "http://127.0.0.1:8080/get/epub/The Children of Men_318.epub" (fails) So now that I know the problem, how do I fix this?? |

Spaces are not allowed in URL's - they are meant to be escaped to the %20 format.
In Stanza are you using the option to set up Calibre as a Web Page or as a Catalog? I get best results using the Catalog option - and that means that the URL is the of the form: http://host_addressort_number/stanza whereas if doing a Web page you leave of the 'stanza' part. I have had no problem using that way of working with Stanza. |

I've tried setting it up as both using "shared books" and as an online catalog. Neither works when the error is in the calibre database. When I clicked on test server under preferences from calibre, calibre itself fails to retrieve the files that have spaces. So calibre is somehow for the most part failing to put "%."
EDIT: Let me clarify...I have no problems seeing the list of books. I just can't download most of them because of the lack of "%" which I don't know how to fix in calibre Last edited by jonsarik; 09-28-2009 at 03:51 PM. |

I too found that the best way to access my books on Calibre from my iTouch was using the new catalog method. Most reliable and several different ports work. The command line itimpi gave above works nicely as long as I include both the port number and the /stanza part.

Just for shits and giggles I went ahead and created "My Library" as a Stanza online catalog using the following url: http://192.168.0.2:8080/stanza. Works great...until I try to download the ebooks. Again, issue is the books with get titles having a '%' in the db work just fine but for some reason these are the exception, not the norm. Out of about 176 titles, I can download maybe 10 of them. They are all epubs.

I do not see the problem you are having with spaces in names - they are always getting escaped correctly for me.. There must be some other non-obvious factor at work.
Do you by any chance have the % in the names displayed in the calibre GUI? I guess that case might not be handled correctly. |

No, in the GUI (metatags) the titles are spaced correctly. They are all downloaded from whichever central server I have set up via ISBN. But for some reason, when I run the test (the one that shows up as a web page), the get command works correctly only on a few of them. Funny things like 2001: A Space Odyssey works fine but the other three books don't. Weird.

Are some of them still DRM'd? Can you do a global "change metadata" in Calibre that fixes the % issue? |

They are all epubs. I did verify and was able to download 50 out of the 176 (not 10, sorry). They don't seem to have DRM as most were previously LIT or html with a couple PDFs that I converted to epub through calibre.
I'm not sure what global metadata change I can make that won't mess everything up but it might be worth a shot and then go back and correct for each individual book (ugh). |

Did those that download, download sequentially and then stop downloading or is it hit and miss?
You might try changing the meta data on a couple of books that will not currently download and see if they suddenly download before you attempt any global fix. Can you trace back to which books where lit vs html and/or the source that could give you a clue on why. I have a library of over 900 ebooks in Calibre and have never run into this. Mine all seem to download easily although I don't read that many on my iTouch. cheers |

calibre's book download links dont use the title at all for the stanza feeds. A book download link looks like this
/get/epub/1215 Run calibre-server --develop in a terminal and then try to connect using your iPhone to see the actual requests being sent. |
