calibre V0.9.42 released

MobileReader Kovid just released calibre V0.9.42. It includes bug-fixes related to the new improved database backend (still in testing, following the link for more information), along with the following other fixes and changes:

New Features
  • When downloading metadata from Amazon, convert the amazon categories into tags. You can turn this off by going to Preferences->Metadata download and configuring the Amazon source.
  • Kobo driver: Add an option to modify the styling in books being sent to the device, based on a template on the device.
  • Get Books: Add support for two more Polish ebook stores: cdp.pl and ebooki.allegro.pl
  • calibredb: Add a new clone command to create clones of libraries with the same custom columns, virtual libraries, etc. as the current library.

Bug Fixes
  • MOBI metadata: Do not fail to set metadata in MOBI files if they have EXTH fields with NULL pointers to a cover or thumbnail.
  • Fix editing of book metadata failing when its timestamp is out of range for the system.
  • Fix renaming a user category to the same name it already has erases the user category.
  • Fix drag 'n drop of cover onto conversion dialog not working
  • Device drivers: Explicitly fsync() all files when writing to devices, to reduce chances of file corruption if the device is disconnected while jobs are running
  • Fix calibre not appearing in Ubuntu's 'Open with..' menu

Improved news sources
  • PC World

What is the purpose of this thread in this MB forum, when the forum already has a long-standing Sticky thread The Latest What's New

I assumed last weeks similar post was a mistake, i.e. it was intended for another MB forum.

The problem with the Sticky thread is even though the first post gets updated it is dated 2012 and never indicates to those passing by that there is any update to the thread.

I have un-stuck the thread, but left it closed so it will age off. The hit rate was not that great anyway.

Even though it had a 2012 date, any edit made it act like a new post had been made.

What would happen if theducks, posted this weeks change notice as a new reply, and deleted last weeks reply (assuming he can) would that light up the Sticky ?

The thread would grow real long for new users as 'soft deletes' leave remnants AFAIK.

It is moot. I unstuck it and it flew off somewhere in the list, probably never to be found.

It was mostly a duplicate of the official 'Whats new' for those who just could not click the help Icon, then whats new (or set a bookmark for future use).

Maybe Jack Nicholson has it

I sometimes used it to check on something when I was here, no matter I just bookmarked the 'official' What's New

Soft deletes only show to those of us with the rights to delete the messages in the first place.

I suppose it this kind of announcement (which also appears on the frontpage btw) may make more sense if it is posted in the general e-book news section, assuming that not every MobileRead frequents the calibre forums every day.

I think it's great that you are including calibre's update on the home page. Keeping the post in the calibre forum seems like a great place to me.

I rarely look at the 'Front Page', My MR Bookmark in Firefox, jumps me directly to 'E-Book Software' section. e-mail notices take care of the othe 2 forums I follow, but do not see much traffic.
