mouse click tracking or analytics?

Hello all,

My client has decided to digitize his printed periodicals to the epub format. He also wants to ad some sort of mouse clicking tracking or analytics on advertiser ads and links.

I literally have no idea where to start. Can it be done? Can it be done with Google analytic's or some other tracking software? Are there tutorials, articles or books on this? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, make it a great day,

You cannot assume that any given eReading device has (a) a mouse, or (b) a web connection. An ePub may well be read on a stand-alone device with no connection to the outside world.

Is your customer assuming that ePubs are just web pages?

I under stand the assuming part, valid point. Thanks

The main focus of the epub documents would be the iTunes store, the iPad, and the iPhone.

But I would think a user who would click(instead of a mouseclick) on a available url would be connected to the web, why would you perform that call to action if you weren't?

You might want to read this blogpost by Liza Daly. Tracking software is basically just a piece of script embedded in the page, so you might be able to modify it to suit your needs.

This would probably only work on iBooks, though, I don't think there are other repub readers that recognise Javascript.
