Introducing new tool: "Edit ToC"
Hi all,
This week's calibre release contains a new tool "Edit ToC" designed to allow you to easily create/edit the Table of Contents in EPUB and AZW3 files. You can edit the entries in the ToC, delete them, re-arrange them and even change the location they point to by simply clicking on the corresponding place in the book. To use this feature go to Preferences->Toolbars and add the "Edit ToC" tool to your main toolbar, then just select a book and click the Edit ToC button. The rest is hopefully self explanatory. In the future I will be adding the ability to auto-generate the ToC from headings and/or links (something you can do easily with conversions). This is completely new code, so there may be bugs, feel free to point them out Enjoy. Last edited by kovidgoyal; 03-15-2013 at 04:49 AM. |

The ability to auto-generate ToC will be greatly appreciated. I can't wait for that feature!

A nice feature. Something I was missing in Calibre. I like it.
One thing I saw, when you start the tool you have first the menu option create a new entry. If you select an existing toc the options change to a set of actions but you can't go back to this first menu option. It’s maybe a bit inconsistent for a book what have already a toc. By playing around, some when the wish came up to combine this tool with xpath expression from the conversion toc dialog. It would be nice to have something like a preselected toc where I can define what entries I like to see (e.g. for books with long chapter listings). Only a thought and may be something for future enhancements. |

@Divingduck: You can add new entries from the individual entry screens as well, so there is no need to go back to the start screen. The start screen is mostly there for introducing the tool and for books that have empty tocs.
As I said I will be adding the feature to create ToC automatically from the book based on headings/links/etc. No reason I can't add a XPath based add as well. |

Thanks Kovid. Am Reading the "Game of Thrones" Series. ToC is by numbers only and chapter heading by name of character only. This will help to put them together (such as 42. Jon V).

Thanks Kovid and all the other good people who work on Calibre. When I updated 2 days ago I just found out about this new goodie. It's awesome and adds yet another super-convenient feature to one of the best free software programs ever developed.
Calibre, along with Sigil, now make it so easy to edit an epub compared to two years ago when I first started tweaking epubs. It's like night and day. Both programs have progressed tremendously. Again, thanks to those who work on both programs for a job exceptionally done. --Pat |

What a nice surprise. The TOC Editor becomes more and more very useful functionality. Thanks again, Kovid.

Just used this for the first time to tidy up a really messy TOC in a purchased book and must say it proved very useful - thanks.
One minor enhancement which would be nice would be the option to "Proper Case" TOC entries. The book in question had long chapter titles all in UPPER case which looked "loud" and had to be cropped by my Sony reader. |

I have a problem when trying to nest entries when the current TOC is already flattened. As an example if the TOC looks like this
Code:
Part 1 Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Part 2 ... Code:
Part 1 Chapter 3 Chapter 2 Chapter 1 Part 2 ... I should also probably add that I can work round it by drag-dropping the 3 chapters a second time, which un-reverses them. |
