NFC sticker in Paperwhite packaging?
I just bought a Paperwhite and black cover in Waterstones, Glasgow.
On opening the leather cover packaging, there's a white sticker, about an inch square, that looks like it has NFC wiring on it, i.e. it looks like one of those programmable NFC stickers you can buy, lying loose between the cover and cardboard. Anyone else get this? |

I should have mine in a few days. I'll see if my phone reads the sticker

Could be an RFID chip, not sure if the same thing. The K3 has an RFID chip in the case

That's not an NFC chip, it's an RFID tag (probably used for inventory control).

Well, I guess terminology is a bit fuzzy around "NFC". Some people use it as a general term covering (passive tag) RFID applications as well. The acronym "NFC" soulds like managers' talk when they decided that referring to all these different standards became too complicate to sell it to customers.

Whoever said they are for inventory control is right.
By embedding it into the packaging, it makes it hard to remove if your intent is to shoplift. DVDs these days even include them. The store can activate them, and then they deactivate them at the counter so the alarms don't go off when you walk out of the store. Have you heard stuff that buzzed when buying it? That was the cashier disabling that sticker. They've gotten so cheap now that manufacturers will just cut them from a sheet and include them. They don't even bother with affixing them to anything because it's just extra time and cost. |
