Yes please. Can you load them somewhere and send a link? I'll pass that on or copy it somewhere Kobo can get at it. And was it a WiFi sync?

Had the same problem going from 2.4.0 to 2.5.0,
but from 2.5.0 to 2.5.1 it was fine.
I wonder if the problem is in the 2.4.0 (or earlier)
update code.

Thanks for that info. Is it ok to delete that 2.5.1 zip file after it updates correctly? After the update installed, that zip file is still there taking up space on the reader.

One thing I noticed when checking the reader, the time/date on the .kobo directory seems to remain ahead by 5-6 hours (time shown was 4/25 5:08am (current time is still 4/24 though for me and my reader did have the correct local time). Is there any chance the future date causes some issue with the update process?
The.zip file can be deleted once the update has finished. If the timestamp is consistently off, I'd suspect it is using UTC (aka GMT) for the time stamp.

David

I had to pinhole reset too. Wifi update, downloaded, then froze. Pinhole reset and the update downloaded and applied.

I had tried 3x to let it update itself, each time having to use the pinhole to reset the reader and it never did update on its own. I had to unpack the zip file as DNSB instructed on Page 3 and when I simply unplugged the reader from the USB, it finally updated correctly.

I bought a Kobo glo last week and after reading lots here I have a few concerns about the way the software is heading. Restrictions on use, spying on customers, phoning home, continuous updates and the like.
What is the best version as far as stability and ease of hacking ? I don't need any fancy gimmicks like a book shelf, I can look through a directory structure to find the book where I put it.
With ver 2.5 unless it can get to the internet it says no network connection, which is plain wrong, I would like to run samba to connect to our server.
If there is a better place to put these questions please move me there
Thanks Auda

I retract my earlier statement, on my Glo it downloaded twice with a paperclip reset/reboot in between. The second d/l was over very quickly, perhaps it checked and the file was present...

On my Touch, it downloaded once and went through with the installation without a hitch.

Sorry it was a late night and thinking back not as simple as I first thought.

2.5.1 on a Touch; PDFs still leave insane ghosting when zooming. This basically makes zooming completely impractical.

You can avoid this by not registering, never synchronizing with the kobo server, and editing the host file.

Looking through the directory structure to find a book is a little cumbersome without connecting to the reader from outside. Besides this, concerning the average usage of the reader you don't gain much (or anything at all) my knowing the location of a book. Main advantage of the shelfs over a folder based system is that you can categorize (and find) the book by multiple criteria.
Concerning connecting to a server, you could search the Kobo Developer's Corner.

I thought this was impossible: are you saying it is possible to setup the device without registering?

People have skipped the registration by manually inserting data into the SQL database on the device

Uploaded one 'stopped' Wifi sync upgrade (stack_01.log) at DropBox (I needed to reset with a pin to get it going again and did the upgrade manually through my laptop with the dowloaded zip unpacked back into the .kobo directory)

The dictionaries not working for some people is fixed. Also the store category names should be in your language.
Does that mean we're going to get the books presented in the store in our chosen language, regardless of our geographical location? Will these changes end up on the desktop version and Android versions as well as the website?

I can't get my Glo to show any books in the categories I tried, whereas the same categories on my Android Kobo on my phone shows a variety of titles.

Verus

It always ticked me off royally that I can't access any English books without using search while temporarily residing in a non-English speaking country (and being forced book titles upon me in the local language). Stupid IP link to languages without proper alternatives is in my eyes discrimination against expatriates/travellers.

Currently it's a mix of mainly localised titles and a few English ones (my chosen language obviously).

Thanks, I'll pass it on.

I think it means the categories listed in the shop on the device will be in the language being used on the device. At least that seems to be what is happening as I changed languages just now. But, I don't know what happened before.

Ouch. I can confirm that it is displaying correctly here in a few different languages. Maybe it is related to the country you have your account registered in.

Being stuck down-under, I don't get the language problem. But, I keep getting the "not available internationally". But, changing my billing address to another country seems to side step this.
