Buchan, John: The Courts of the Morning. V1. 23 Jul 2013

When Richard Hannay is approached by the American military attaché in London to carry out a delicate undercover mission, he immediately seeks out his old friend Sandy Arbuthnot. They meet at Sandy's country house in the Scottish Borders, but soon afterwards Sandy disappears in mysterious circumstances. As it turns out, these events are only the prelude to a dramatic series of adventures which take place against the backdrop of a small South American Republic that has fallen under the spell of a ruthless Dictator.

The Dictator is a powerful and charismatic leader, but he is also the mastermind behind a sinister international conspiracy that threatens the peace and security of the entire world. He has to be stopped, and Sandy Arbuthnot, master of disguise and born adventurer, is the man to do it, though revolution and war may be the price that has to be paid.

Provenance
1. This book derives originally from a web page on the Project Gutenberg Australia web site.
2. It was transformed into an epub and revised by Crutledge.
3. HarryT extensively revised it and incorporated it into his "Richard Hannay Omnibus".
4. The text of this book is basically HarryT's , with between 500 and 1000 changes made (mostly very minor) to more closely align the text to that of my 1993 B&W paperback edition.
It's not identical to the B&W edition, because I haven't tried to modernise what are now slightly archaic spellings (e.g. from 'to-day' to 'today'), only to correct what seem to be typos. There are a small number (perhaps ten or twenty) of genuine differences between the editions (never longer than a phrase or so) where it isn't clear which was the original Buchan, and which was introduced by a compositor or transcriber. Not having access to a first edition, I've just had to choose what seemed to read best.
