Hahaha, bitte sagt mir, dass der Pfandleiher in der deutschen Übersetzung irgendwie so ähnlich wie Marmon heißt. Den Kerl "Luker" zu nennen, macht mir Collins gleich doppelt sympathisch. :-D Gibt's eigentlich noch mehr solcher Perlen? Mit ist sonst nichts dergleichen ins Auge gesprungen...

Die Idee von Herrn Jenkins ist aber auch mal wieder so ein typisch viktorianisches Hirngespinst. Wäre das hier nicht ein Roman, müsste man sich glatt auf die Seite der skeptischen Charaktere schlagen. So bleibt einem nichts anderes übrig, als machtlos zuzusehen, wie die ganze, abstruse Idee tatsächlich funktioniert. Macht aber nichts, diese zeitgenössische Denkweise verzeihe ich dem Autor gerne.

Wenn ich das hier so lese, frage ich mich, ob ich nicht noch dem Buch eine 2. Chance gebe soll. Liegt es vielleicht doch an der Übersetzung, dass es mich nicht so angesprochen hat.

Ihr scheint ja alle das Original zu lesen.

Ich finde zwar, dass die Erzählweise zwar wie typisch für die damalige Zeit sehr weitschweifig ist, ansonsten erinnert der Stil mich aber durchaus bereits an die späteren klassischen britischen Kriminalgeschichten.

Ich fürchte, ich bin nach knapp 5 Stunden Hören immer noch hintendran, aber immerhin ist der Mondstein jetzt mal verschwunden, d. h. es passiert was.

Nee, man hat den Namen "Luker" übernommen in der deutschen Übersetzung. Vermutlich würden mir im englischen Original zuviele Feinheiten entgehen.

Ich bin inzwischen beim zweiten Erzähler angelangt.
Nachdem ich mich an den weitschweifigen Stil gewöhnt habe, steigt mein Lesevergnügen von Kapitel zu Kapitel (bei Hadschi Baba aus Ispahan war es umgekehrt). Zudem ist ein auf den ersten Blick "weitschweifig erzähltes" und als unwichtig erscheinendes Detail vielleicht später doch von Bedeutung...

Ok, ich bin auch wieder dabei und habe 3 Kapitel weiter gelesen. Es liest sich doch mit der Zeit etwas flüssiger. Hübsch fand ich die Ausführungen über diese neue Mode alles wissenschaftlich zu untersuchen, dadurch werden die Blumen auch nicht schöner...

An die Details werde ich mich nicht unbedingt erinnern können, aber dafür habe ich ja euch.

:-D Ja, die Plaudertasche Betteredge hat schon was für sich, wenn man sich erst einmal an den weit- und abschweifigen Stil und einige seiner merkwürdigeren Ansichten gewöhnt hat. Herrlich wird's dann, wenn sich einer der späteren Erzähler über genau diese Ansichten lustig macht. Und außerdem ist das ein gutes Training für den Rest des Buches - hier gibt's dann noch mehr Charaktere mit merkwürdigen Macken (z.B. zum Thema "weiße Moschusrosen ohne Veredelungsunterlage". Nee, ernsthaft! :-D )

Och, mach Dir mal keine Sorgen. Dafür, dass das hier mehr oder weniger ein Krimi ist, sind die Details weit weniger wichtig, als man gemeinhin denken würde.

Ich lese grade ausnahmsweise auf die Übersetzung (weiß gar nicht genau warum), bin wegen anderer Dinge noch sehr am Anfang, überlege aber auch, jetzt den Sprachumstieg zu machen.

+1. Dass es weitschweifig werden würde, war ja klar, aber die Art und Weise wie Collins da seine sehr modernen Einsprengsel untermischt und wie sehr er mit Karikierungen und "tongue in cheek" die Sache nach vorn bringt, gefällt mir auch zunehmend besser.

Ich bin mittlerweile bei Teil 2 angelangt (nach knapp 8 Stunden hören). Leider weiß ich immer noch nicht so recht, was ich davon halten soll. Es ist ganz angenehm, es vorgelesen zu bekommen, aber die große Spannung bleibt bisher aus (zumindest für mich). Ich habe ja noch gut 12 Stunden vor mir, da kann noch einiges passieren, ich hoffe einfach mal das Beste.

Das Ende war interessant.

Spannend fand ich ja, dass Wilkie die Inder einfach so "gewinnen" lässt.

Das Ende ist auch sonst unerwartet romantisch und ausgeglichen - Rachel und Franklin werden glücklich, Betteredge hat seinen Crusoe (und das mehr oder weniger letzte Wort), Cuff hat seine Rosen, Jennings stirbt zumindest erfüllt und beseelt von seiner guten Tat, und Drusilla muss verarmt nach Frankreich abziehen. Selbst Luker bleibt weitgehend unbehelligt. Fehlt nur noch, dass Limping Lucy im Lotto gewinnt und in Wuppertal eine Herrenboutique aufmacht, aber so weit lässt Collins sich dann doch nicht hinreißen.


Spaß gemacht hat es jedenfalls - mehr als ursprünglich erwartet, wenn ich ehrlich sein soll. Ein übergroßer Fan der typischen, geschwätzigen Ich-Erzähler in viktorianischen Romanen werde ich wohl deshalb trotzdem nicht, aber in kleinen Dosen geht's.

Bin jetzt gerade am Anfang von Teil zwei. Im Gegensatz zu Betterdge’s augenzwinkernder Geschwätzigkeit gefällt mir diese religiös/bigotte Rechthaberin vom Erzählstil überhaupt nicht, da wird die Handlung vieles rausreissen müssen.

Die Frau ist furchtbar, keine Frage. Sie steuert aber in der Tat einige wichtige Puzzlestücke bei. Und das Ende ihrer Erzählung ist herrlich, weil nämlich Herr Blake von ihrem Gehabe dann auch die Nase voll hat und sich die beiden einen kurzen epistolarischen Zweikampf liefern. Abgesehen davon wird aber auch zwischendurch mehr als deutlich, was Collins von solchen Leuten hält. :-D
