Hey!! Let's get some action going! What are we reading? - Page 1140

Yesterday afternoon I read "The White Feather", the penultimate books in P.G. Wodehouse's "School" series (which, as I've mentioned previously, although far less well-known that his "Jeeves" and "Blandings Castle" series, is my personal favourite). In this book (which is a sequel to the earlier book, "The Gold Bat"), a member of the school who "funks out" of a fight with some local youths and is shunned by his schoolmates as a result, resolves to prove his courage by secretly learning to box. An excellent story.

On now to the next Agatha Christie, "The Secret of Chimneys" - her 6th novel, published in 1925.

That was a really good extension of the original story. Recommended, and you don't need to have read any of his books to enjoy it.

Reading The Name of the Wind, by Patrick Rothfuss. I originally read this some time ago, but realized when I started to read the second in the series, The Wise Man's Fear, which was sitting in my TBR, that I had really forgotten way too much. So, I'm doing a full re-read, switching back and forth between eBook and audio book, and enjoying it very much. Sadly we're all still waiting for the third book in the series.

The Name of the Wind has been on my Kindle for 7 months. I really want to read the book but at the same time I don't want to until the third and final book comes out. Which is in 2014 according to Rothfuss.

Go ahead and read it. By the time the final one comes out, you'll be ready for a re-read, and you'll get all sorts of new things from it. Really, this is an excellent book, and I'm enjoying it immensely.

That's the problem. I never re-read. Even if it's a book I really enjoyed.

Just finished The Art of Racing in the Rain. It was nice and funny and cute and sad. I pretty much cried as much at the end of the book as I did at the very beginning.Once again if one of your little buddies died, know what you're getting in before reading.
I really liked the story even though I sometimes couldn't agree with the author's opinions.

Enzo is a lovely dog and if anything I regret that our dog is not here anymore. I'm sure I would have started to talk to him in a different way (and, yes, I know this is a fiction, but you know how it is to live with pets).

I'm still reading and enjoying A Clash of Kings.

Better than the previous issue, although still more towards the literary fantasy end of things than I prefer.

Next I was going to read Martian Knightlife by James P Hogan, but I find that I have read it before, presumbably when I bought it back in 2001. It doesn't appeal enough for me to re-read it, so I'll move on to my next-oldest-unread book, once I work out which one that is.

Ah, I think you're missing a pleasure. So, try the Audible version for the re-read. You will get a very different experience from it, and the narrator is quite good.

Yeah I agree that never re-reading a book deprives one of pleasure. Obviously there are many books that are not even worth their first read, but when I reread an old favorite, I am often amazed at how much I missed on previous readings, especially things like subtle humor and early hints of of plot and character.

Thanks for the recommendation. I've had the second one waiting for so long that I'm wondering if I'm going to benefit from a re-read. It's not that practical for me to dive in at the moment, but an audiobook could work out well for me.

Hmmm - unfortunately I bought the ebook through my Australian address - so no Audible discounts.

I think it's a mistake to assume that people who say they don't re-read have never, ever given it a shot before. I kept trying to re-read some of my favorite books from time to time, but the "pleasure" and "enjoyment" others have attributed to the practice almost never seemed to manifest itself in my experience. So I quit trying to re-read for the most part. I still have a crack at it every now and again, to see if I've developed a knack for it -- because I'd frankly like to enjoy my favorite books more than once. But alas... no dice. Can't stay focused (and I refuse to skim).

And to those who are waiting: I wouldn't hold my breath for a 2014 release of Rothfuss' latest installment.

Flying Too High was a highly enjoyable read and I'll be going back after a short break to read the next of the Phryne Fisher mysteries.

The next one is The Clue of the Velvet Mask (Nancy Drew #30) by Carolyn Keene (Harriet Stratemeyer Adams) and I'm looking forward to it. It is written by a different ghost-writer.

Also, I'm reading a short story collection taking place in The Hollowsverse, Into the Woods: Tales from the Hollows and Beyond (The Hollows #10.1) by Kim Harrison.
