iWork outputs ePub

According to PC Mag, the newest update to iWork will allow it to output ePub. Wonder how this will compare to something like Sigil (can you edit the code in iWork?).

Yeah, that's an important update by apple, and unsurprisingly apple seems to be the only mainstream company to have the foresight to include it so early and as a free update without forcing the users to buy anything. As for Ms or google...all talk as per usual.

Important news (from a couple of days ago) that have gone strangely amiss here. I haven't tried the feature yet, but I ll get back to you as to what you can or cannot do. I don't think you ll be able to edit the code though.

From what I've heard, it's merely an "Export as epub" feature, kinda like what Atlantis does. Useful, but you still can't edit the code or open epub documents. And the exported epub won't look the way it does in Pages since the feature set doesn't translate directly and different renderers are used. Again, useful in a pinch but as primitive as it can get.

Apple knowledgebase article about the new feature is here.

And Liza Daly reviewed it in her blog here ... One big philosophical error by Apple - still works, but wow

Here's the ePub output of Apple's "ePub Best Practices for Pages" example document. I set the author as Apple, topic as Non-fiction, and the first page as cover. Other than that it's unaltered.

For some reason Springy (Mac archiving program) can't unzip the XHTML, reporting it as either not a zip file or corrupted. It handles the .ncx and .opf files fine though. Weird, but it must be just Springy since the ePub passes EpubCheck and opens in Sigil, iBooks, ADE, etc.
