There are reports that iPhone OS 3.2 (first used on the iPad) will support file downloads, see Confirmed: iPhone OS 3.2 has support for video calling, file downloads, and SMS. This will presumably also be eventually available on the iPod Touch.

If you strip the DRM from the ePub ebooks, then Stanza Desktop or Calibre can setup a service on your PC to transfer them to your Touch. Another option is Txtr iPhone app - Adobe DRM, over the air downloads, and more. This now works with DRMed ePubs.

We don't know for sure yet.

It is almost certain iBooks will support reading unencrypted ePub files, however, and that means managing those through iTunes. If third party apps which read unencrypted ePub files are allowed on, we'll have have to wait and see.

There's mixed data about how easy general file transfer to the iPad will be, you may need to use the same stupid trick of an app with a web server built in as for the iPhone.

Here's the steps I use (assuming no DRM):

1. Import eBook file into Calibre
2. Edit the metadata with book name, author, and add a cover pic
3. Convert to ePub and view to make sure it looks good
4. Email the file to my GMail account
5. Pull the file into the iPhone with Stanza

You can setup a book source to GMail within Stanza. I've found that this is the easiest method. Remember to send Kovid some $$ - he is really on top of things. There are updates every few days to the app.

I am hoping Apple will continue to approve the Stanza application for use on the iPad - it really is nice.
