Windows 7 - How To Remove Storage Card Partition (Rooted NOOKcolor)

Many people are rooting and probably need to know how to remove the partition on their SD card. A simple format will not restore all storage capacity.

Please share how to do this if you know.

I think I read somewhere to put it in the NC, unmount the card and then format it on the NC.

Won't the NC try to reboot off the card?

A preferred way would be to do it via your operating system. I did mine on a Mac so I can't offer Windows advice.

Disk Manager in Windows won't let you delete the partition so what I do is run GPartEd Live CD. With it, you can boot from the CD and run the program and delete the partition. Then just remove the CD and reboot back into Windows. There's also a USB version but it gets a little more complicated to set up.

Wow, Windows 7 still doesn't provide this functionality.

You still need to manually fire up an [elevated] command prompt and type commands in win 7.

The best way to do this is to simply remove the SD card from the device if you need to cold-boot your NC. Once the NC is up and running, insert the card, and the system will recognize it.

Then:

- hit the Nook Soft Menu button (the up arrow with half moon around bottom half)
- Settings button
- Device info button
- SD card button
- Unmount SD card button
- Format SD card button (then hit "format" at pop-up to confirm)

The NC will then ask you to hit OK when finished, and will mount the SD card for use.

Yeah, folks still need to be careful about accidentally rebooting with the nooted SD card in the device. I've heard some folks say it will just re-root it, no problem, but that wasn't my [accidental] experience/result. I ended up having to start over the rooting process from scratch, including the update from Nook 1.0.0 to 1.0.1.

Yeah, that's still my concern as well. That's why I would prefer folks do it via the OS.

Active@ Partition Manager is a freebie for Windows and will let you delete the partitions and then create a new one and reformat. It's some extra steps, but hey, you also get a free Partition Manager out of the deal.

SD Card Formatter

You can just get "SD Card Formatter" (and instructions) from here - works very well for a 'nootered' SD Card:

http://www.sdcard.org/consumers/formatter/

I've been using it and it's just one-click to get your card back to its original state.

Scion, there some issues with the MS-DOS volume deletion. Even when using an override command on the volume delete, if something is accessing the volume, MS-DOS will sometimes STILL not clear the volume. Not to mention the fact that all volumes are listed in the MS-DOS window, and selecting the wrong one could be far more disasterous.

Probably be best to just stick with the NC method at this point.

(or what those folks above me said)

I had discovered the SD formatter that EMT mentioned above. That seems to work well.
