Authorizing device without Sony Reader Library on PC

Since I can't seem to get Sony Reader Library software to work, I downloaded Calibre (works great!) and directly installed ADE. But how do I get the Sony Reader authorized so I can read DRMd books there? I bought a book (my first), and I can read it on the PC. And Calbre let me copy it to the PRS600. But, when I try to open it I get a message "protected content" or some such, and it won't open.

Adobe Digital Editions has it's own UI. When you run it, it should detect your reader and let you authorize.

I would be more specific if I remembered the steps I used...

Have you actually created an ADE account? This is usually done through ADE. Once you register then connect your Reader, I think the Reader should be authorized as well but can't remember the exact steps.

If you figure out the correct steps please let us know so we can update the Sony Reader Troubleshooting Guide

When I authorized my 505 and 900, I was unable to do so without a driver that Sony includes in the Library software.

I would suggest asking a 600 owner with your operating system to email you the driver. That might solve the problem.

It does not appear possible to do this without Sony Reader Library. I have an ADE account, I have ADE, I can actually open the book in ADE on the laptop. But ADE does not see the Sony Reader at all.

So I have a $299 paperweight.

And Adobe is so helpful. I asked about how to authorize it, and here's what they said:

"Steve, sony e reader and ADE are same right?"

Sony is totally unhelpful. Adobe is totally unhelpful. But MobileRead forums are VERY helpful! After toomanybooks suggestion, I installed the Sony Reader Library software, even though it doesn't work on my machine. But when I did it DID install the appropriate drivers, and then ADE could find my ebook, and I'm reading again.

So thanks all. And yes, you do have to have some Sony drivers to make it work it appears.

As near as I can tell, whether you need drivers or not depends on the operating system you use. I use Vista 64 Ultimate, and Sony has no 64 bit drivers. One of the old Sony install problems was that it tries to install a 32 bit driver. Skipping that step, it installs OK. That should not be a problem with current builds.

I bet it's a 32 bit driver. Because it installs in the "Program Files (x86)" directory which is where Windows 7 puts 32 bit programs.

You are lucky. After much toing and froing I sort of got Adobe to grudgingly admit that ADE will not recognize the PRS 600 on a Mac OS and that the Sony Reader software is the only way to load the epub books on it. It's not fatal to me - just the principle of the thing. They advertise that ADE recognizes the reader natively, they also provide a Mac OS version of the program. Nowhere does it indicate the additional limitations of the Mac OS version. Since its freeware I can't complain too much but it seems a little half-assed to me.

I had the same problem... I have a mac and couldn't get ADE to recognize my Sony (prs 600) After a lohohot of reading, I found this: http://www.booksonboard.com/index.php?F=Mac-SonyReader and even I, a total computer clutz have managed to get it to work. Maybe this also helps.

FYI: On the Mac. (I think this applies to windows to though)

ADE will only be able to connect to the Sony readers if you install the Sony library software first/also. The Sony library software includes the "drivers/kext/whatever" that ADE needs to connect to them.

You don't need to use the Sony library software... just have it installed.

Also, with the most recent versions of Sony Library software you don't even need ADE.

Thanks for the info. I got a suggestion about the "need to install Sony even if you don't use it" part, and it worked. As not needing ADE, that would indeed work if I could use it. But the reason for this whole thread is that Sony Reader software will not work on my laptop (at least, after 3 tech support, a product specialist, and referral to the developers failed to make it work). But no worries, ADE is working, and Calibre is great.

Understood. Was just trying to give complete info. Glad you got something working!

SteveT - It is irritating. After a huuuuuge hassle I managed to get the reader and ADE up and running (uk purchase, on a mac). I finally managed to buy a book, have it load into ADE and transfer it over to the Sony library and then onto the reader.

But I can't do a thing with library books which is a real disappointment. They load onto ADE (on the PC at work, on the Mac the programme is useless - I'm a Calibre girl) but there's no way I can get them into the Sony library and over onto the reader.
Not much help from anyone at Adobe none at all from Sony. Grrrrrrr

I wouldn't mind so much but both Sony and Adobe keep saying their programmes are completely compat with MAC, not so, not so...
