That's a bummer. I really wanted to like the Kobo--support the smaller company and all that. But it just doesn't match my usage pattern.

I picked up a Kindle Voyage today to compare, and despite needing a azw3 conversion (which I was already doing for an older Kindle), it fits what I want to do a lot better. So the Kobo's going back.

It's a pity, but it is important to choose a device that fits you, not the other way round. I think some people here forget that.

Thanks. The second one looks like it.

I wasn't boasting I just noticed the number on the home screen as "999". I like numbers like that, but am always suspicious when I see them. So I'm wondering if the counter might be stuck. I'll see later.

But thinking of the hours I've read, 999 hours seems a bit low. It should be the number of hours using any Kobo ereader. If I read one hour per day, that works out as 2.7 years. I'm at about 3.7 years with my Kobos and I would have thought my average was more than one hour a day. Plus, both my sons use Kobo's that log into my account, so should be contributing. Admittedly, one hardly reads, but for the other, an hour in a day would be a very light day.

I never had such a problem now I dont have any reading statistics, Kobo shows book as finished, but not in statistics, just in a book list.

I have tried to compress the database in Kobo Utilities but got this : Database disk image is malformed.

Can you help me to fix this, please?

Yes, those mean the database is corrupted. But, I would have expected a compress would worked. As this was during the a backup, I would recommend restoring a previous backup. If you don't have a good one, the only choice is to sign out on the device. That will replace the database with an empty one, restart the device and take you through the setup steps. Then it will reload the books that are on the device.

Thank you so much, compress didn't worked but I did just like you said and sing out from the device and everythings works fine now. I've lost all statistics and number of read books.
I didn't have a good backup since it kept 3 kopies
Now I know more, and will remember to have a good backup.
Thanks again

In case I will have to restore a previous backup I know that it's not automatic process form Calibre. Which files and where should I copy to the device?

Good to hear it is working.

The utilities maintains the number of backup. But, it only removes the oldest after the backup is successful. If it finds that backup is corrupt, it renames the file and leaves the older versions there.

If the database is corrupt, you need to restore the "KoboReader.sqlite" file to the ".kobo" directory on the device. After doing this and disconnecting, you should restart the device.

Since I have PDF files only as a fallback if I have no EPUB (and for those scientific articles), I can safely assume that if the list of book formats contains PDF then there is no other usable format. So I simply decide on that where to place the respective book...

Btw., I have the impression that with this change the KoboUtilities plug-in doesn't work correctly, but I have to follow up on that.
I can't see anything in that template that would stop any of the functions in the Kobo Utilities plugin from working. I can't think of anything it does with the filenames directly. The only reason it sees them is they are used in the Kobo database as keys. But, if something isn't working, tell me and I'll look at it.

Hi David,

when I changed the template and tried to restore the reading position afterwards, it wasn't able to identify the book on the reader (even though it definitely was there with the same filename, only with the changed path). Afterwards it was able to store the reading position (i.e., read the changed position and save it in calibre). The next test is whether it can now restore the reading position after it has stored it for the new path...

Cheers, Joe

Storing and restoring the reading position does not use the file path. And changing the save template shouldn't affect it. If calibre sees that the book is on the device, when you restore the reading position, the database will be updated. If calibre doesn't see the book there, then nothing will happen. And this only works after the book has been processed by the device. You send the book, eject the device and let them be processed. Then you plug it in again and restore the reading positions.

The only other reason I can think of for this to fail is if you restructure the book. The Kobo (and ADE and Sonys) reading positions include the internal filenames. Change these and the restored position won't work when you open the book.

Hi David,

tried again and now it says that it can update the book. So it seems that there is some reference to the actual path or canonical filename.

Since changing the naming convention for the reader will happen never in practical life this shouldn't be any problem and is probably not worth following up on. But if you need me to test something to verify any hypothesis, please tell me :-)

Cheers, Joachim

I suspect that means the first time you tried was before ejecting the device and the second time on the next connection. If so, that is expected and how it works.

If you believe you can reproduce it, run calibre in debug mode and post the log in the Kobo Utilities plugin thread. I will look at it. But, it should work. Changing the save template isn't that common, but fixing the title or author is. Or putting the book the SD card or a different device or after a factory reset. Restoring the reading position works for all of these. I have done all of these except the SD card one in the last few weeks with no problems.

Hi,

After thinking about it again and trying to remember the exact steps leading to the anomaly I believe that you are right, David, and that I tried it before ejecting the device. So, most probably everything is fine. If I can reproduce it by chance, I will try and capture it in debug mode.

Thanks a lot, Joe

Okay so I know the answer to this is probably somewhere in the 66 pages of thread, but damned if I can find it or have the time/brain capacity to read through all 66 pages. So, my problem is this. I'm routinely changing what books I carry on my Mini and switching books back and forth between it and my computer. And I cannot, for the life of me, figure out how to save the read status and position of the books.

I feel like I'm missing something super obvious, but I added the columns in Utilities options, and I added a read status column in the library, but I don't know how to tie it all together and get it working? Like, do I have to add koboreadpct, koborating, kobolastread, and koboreadloc to somewhere other than Utilities options?

I reeeeaaaaally need a For Dummies step-by-step thing here, because I have NO idea what I'm doing

The configuration of the columns look right. To store the positions automatically, select the "Store current bookmarks on connect". When calibre sees the device, it will run the job to store the reading positions. At the end, it will prompt you wit a list of changes to accept.

You can store the positions manually by selecting the "Store/restore current bookmark" option in the menu of the plugin. This will prompt you with some options about the store or restore.
