Here's a Kobo 3-month-old video of the Android app. It shows 2 page landscape and menu layout and options.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ucBBVLMkbyY

The current app in the Market (updated June 2011) looks nothing like this.

I have the same issue on my Sony Tablet. The Kobo Android app shown on their product's page is quite different from the app I downloaded. It's really bare-stripped, with pretty much no options at all, like justify, split pages, etc.

What's up with that? Was a deal signed off where a certain brand of tablets would get the kobo app pre-loaded with a better version?

Here's a good representation of the difference in apps (tablet vs phone).

Some of us with tablets are definitely getting the phone version for some reason.

The Samsung and Acer tablets come pre-installed with the (better) app. Still waiting on a formal explanation for this, as their product page and video are misleading.

Did anyone get any feedback from Kobo?
I could not find anything, neither here nor on getsatisfaction.com

Wouldn't any tablet not running android 3.0 or 4.0 have the phone version?

Could be, but the Sony Tablet S is running Android 3.2, so it shouldn't!

I know they both do(Along with the new Galaxy line) but I don't think the older Galaxy Tab did.

Sorry, when I think of tablets now I'm referring Honeycomb. You're absolutely right. Usually the reference to "optimized for tablets" means that.

I was expecting an answer along the lines of, "We haven't rolled out tablet functionality to the Android Market. We are aware of the differences in the apps". Something. We're just left scratching our heads in bewilderment.

Perhaps an apk of the superior software should be loaded on http://www.freewarelovers.com/android/app/kobo Not sure if that would be alright or possible though.
