I know how you feel, alice pattinson.

Because of personal memories of Skipp and Spector, and a release party for The Light at the End in particular, I visited the Amazon site in the middle of work, went through the motions quickly, and thought I'd succeeded in purchasing a free copy.

Days later, I returned to the site when I couldn't seem to download the novel on my Kindle, only to discover the order hadn't gone through.

Ball-peen hammer, meet cranium.

Try one of the lending sites, as this one is lendable.

Another freebie by Lisa Morton from Evil Jester, novella Wild Girls.

Quote:
Jessie and Dens are two roomies in a small southern town who like movies, drinking, collecting glittery stickers…and the occasional killing spree. When novice reporter Noelle begins to put high heels together with certain puncture wounds, is she about to make a move up to a major paper…or become the next victim?

As the ad copy states: "When novice reporter Noelle begins to put high heels together with certain puncture wounds..."

I was feeling kind of down and under the heel today, so I decided to get this charming novella.

Thanks! - Ouch!

Chasing the Dead by Joel Schreiber is $.99 from Random House. You can also get the audiobook from Audible for $3.49.

Quote:
“You have a very lovely little girl,” breathed the voice on the phone. And just like that, Susan Young is drawn into a living nightmare.

A stranger has kidnapped Sue’s daughter, Veda. But he doesn’t want her money, only her suffering–and he will kill Veda if Sue doesn’t follow his every command. With detailed instructions, the faceless abductor leads Sue into a blinding snowstorm on the longest night of the year, to a place she has not traveled to since childhood. The voice on the other end of the line somehow knows Sue’s deepest, most chilling secret–an ominous incident from her past, buried long ago...

Across the loneliest back roads of Massachusetts, in the black expanse of a New England winter, Sue is forced to confront her most awful fears as she is met at each step by ever increasing horrors created by a monster who is surely something less than human. In the hope of saving her daughter from a kidnapper whose origin seems darker than anything she could ever have imagined, Sue will discover just how much trauma and fright the human body is capable of absorbing.

Set over the course of a single night, Chasing the Dead is a fast-paced, ferociously tense supernatural thriller. With the skill of masters like Dean Koontz and David Morrell, Joe Schreiber has created a tableau of shock and horror, death and destruction, that will draw you in and never let you go.

Free novella from Evil Jester: The Bone Tree by Christopher Fulbright.

Quote:
Above a Civil War graveyard in the rural backwoods of Texas, Kevin and Bobby's treehouse is their haven against the world. But the day Tom Plecker comes screaming through the creek below, terrified of a shadow man, that all changes. Walking Tom home, they see it for the first time -- the tree, its branches twisted like the pain-wracked frame of a fleshless corpse, knotty snarls of bone-white wood clawing the sky from an ashen grove.

A family near the woods turns up dead, a local kid goes missing, and, unknown to Kevin, Bobby's having his own experiences. As Spring brings new life to the forest, the tree remains untouched by the beauty of the surrounding woods, but it's alive ... and it's gaining power. And when the shadow men come to call on the boys, they must fight a supernatural force they barely understand, or fall victim to the apparitions and learn what it means to disappear.

S.P. Miskowski's Shirley Jackson Award-nominated novel Knock Knock is free for Kindle right now. US, UK, CA. It doesn't seem to be available, let alone free, in other e-book formats.

Quote:
At the center of S.P. Miskowski's novel-length fairy tale are three restless girls, best friends stuck in the backwater of Skillute, Washington in the late 1960s. Their neighbors and families are petty or poor, or both. They warn the girls not to wander into the dense forest. Something evil lurks there, people say. The girls are not convinced. During a playful oath, they wander too far into the woods. Their mistake unleashes a malignant spirit that terrorizes Skillute for the next fifty years.

Another freebie from Onium Gatherum: Twenty-Eight Teeth of Rage by Ennis Drake.

Quote:
One man ravaged by disease, the other by war, their stories— and fates— bound by an ancient entity that thrives on suffering.

For Detective Ernest Riley, the path to damnation begins with an anonymously mailed recording detailing a series of grisly murders. Can Riley unravel its secrets without sacrificing his humanity? Or will he surrender to the RAGE inside him?

Strom Wheldon has returned from Iraq a literal half-man. But he’s lost more than his legs to that desert Hell. He’s lost his will to live. Can love save him from the RAGE eating him from within? Or will a gift given in innocence cost him everything?

Something Wicked This Way Comes by Rad Bradbury is $3.99 from HarperCollins. You can also get the audiobook from Audible for $3.49. The audiobook also contains his SF short story, "The Sound of Thunder."

Quote:
Few American novels written this century have endured in th heart and mind as has this one-Ray Bradbury's incomparable masterwork of the dark fantastic. A carnival rolls in sometime after the midnight hour on a chill Midwestern October eve, ushering in Halloween a week before its time. A calliope's shrill siren song beckons to all with a seductive promise of dreams and youth regained. In this season of dying, Cooger & Dark's Pandemonium Shadow Show has come to Green Town, Illinois, to destroy every life touched by its strange and sinister mystery. And two inquisitive boys standing precariously on the brink of adulthood will soon discover the secret of the satanic raree-show's smoke, mazes, and mirrors, as they learn all too well the heavy cost of wishes -- and the stuff of nightmare.

Here's a Horror/Mystery/Humor cross genre freebie today: Suckers by J.A. Konrath and Jeff Strand. Both are entertaining, funny writers. First published by Delirium Press, 2008.

Quote:
Masters of the comedy thriller genre, J.A. Konrath and Jeff Strand, team up for the humorous horror novella Suckers.

Strand's perpetually unlucky character Andrew Mayhem, star of the novels Graverobbers Wanted (No Experience Necessary), Single White Psychopath Seeks Same, and Casket For Sale (Only Used Once), sets off on a simple mission at the request of his wife: Get some spaghetti sauce.

On his way to the store he meets Konrath's obnoxious private eye Harry McGlade, co-star of the Lt. Jack Daniels thrillers Whiskey Sour, Bloody Mary, Rusty Nail, Dirty Martini, Fuzzy Navel, and Cherry Bomb.

Horrific violence, bad jokes, and lots of name calling soon ensues. Some sex, too, but not between the main characters.

Originally, published as a very expensive limited-edition hardcover, Suckers is now available as a super cheap ebook.

But the fun doesn't stop there.

Also included in this ebook are six other Mayhem and McGlade stories, many of them rare and long out of print. First published Delirium Press, 2008.

Whelp Wanted - JA Konrath
Poor Career Choice - Jeff Strand
Taken to the Cleaners - JA Konrath
A Bit of Halloween Mayhem - Jeff Strand
The Necro File - JA Konrath
The Lost (For a Good Reason) Adventure of Andrew Mayhem - Jeff Strand

Supernatural thriller by Robert Masello, Blood and Ice, for $1.99 from Random House.

Quote:
Journalist Michael Wilde—his world recently shattered by tragedy—has come to the South Pole looking for solace and a new lease on life. But what he finds on a routine dive in the polar sea is something else entirely: the bodies of a young man and a young woman, bound with chains and sealed forever in a block of ice. Beside them is an ancient chest filled with a sinister cargo. Wilde’s search to unravel the mystery of this doomed couple will lead from the battlefields of the Crimean War to the unexplored depths of the Antarctic Ocean, where an age-old curse survives to this day. And as the ice around the lovers begins to melt, Wilde will witness what may be a miracle—or a nightmare—in the making. What is dead, it turns out, is not always gone.

R. L. Stine, well known for young adult creepy tales, turns his attention to adults with the novel Red Rain. This book is currently priced $2.99 at Amazon (US).

Quote:
Before there was J. K. Rowling, before there was Stephenie Meyer or Suzanne Collins, there was R.L. Stine. Witty, creepy, and compulsively readable, his books defined horror for a generation of young readers— readers who have now come of age. In Red Rain, Stine uses his unerring knack for creating terror to tap into some very grownup fears. Travel writer Lea Sutter finds herself on a small island off the coast of South Carolina, the wrong place at the wrong time. A merciless, unanticipated hurricane cuts a path of destruction through the island and Lea barely escapes with her life.

In the storm’s aftermath, she discovers two orphaned boys—twins. Filled with a desire to do something to help, to make something good of all she witnessed, Lea impulsively decides to adopt them. The boys, Samuel and Daniel, seem amiable and immensely grateful; Lea’s family back on Long Island—husband Mark, a child psychologist, and their two children, Ira and Elena—aren’t quite so pleased. But even they can’t anticipate the twins’ true nature—or predict that, within a few weeks’ time, Mark will wind up implicated in two brutal murders, with the police narrowing in.

For the millions of readers who grew up on Goosebumps, and for every fan of deviously inventive horror, this is a must-read from a beloved master of the genre.
