I heard Apple is fighting this in court -- they patented English long ago and demand royalties from those who use it.

No, that was thrown out as Apple's computers didn't recognise any date prior to 1904 in the early days (well, in combination with Visicalc...) so couldn't backdate claims prior to that date...
