About Pocketbook 902 and 903
Hi!
I´ve seen that the new e-readers are coming out in a few days (at least the 902). i am buying one of those models but i can´t decide which one. the better model(903) is 70 euro more priced. i´m a student and could use the touch screen. now, my question is : how does the touchscreen affect battery life? can you touch with fingers? in test, how long was the battery life (for 902 and 903)? in advance faba |

More accurately, the 903 does *not* have a touchscreen but rather a Wacom digitizer pad *beneath* the display. The digitizer detects and tracks the included pen but is insensitive to finger activity.
People tend to speak of touch-screens whenever they see screen-based interfaces but fail to consider there are other ways to achieve this. (Think of the Microsoft Surface computers, which are *vision* based--they use infrared cameras behind the screen to detect motion rather than a detection layer that relies on physical contact.) The Wacom digitizer approach is commonly used on Windows TabletPCs where the stylus tracking allows you to control the cursor without touching the screen and reserve actual touch for clicks, drags, and gestures. Until the 903 ships we won't know how sophisticated its pen interface is and what use it makes of the digitizer's capabilities. Going by the comments around here, people seem to be pinning a lot of hopes and building a lot of expectations into the 903. The 903 is supposed to be an ebook reader, not a tablet PC or a Media Pad, and Pocketbook has not been marketing it as anything but a reader. Some of those expectations seem to be getting out of hand so a bit of patience/restraint might be advisable. We'll know soon enough, when it ships, what it can or can't do and how it differs from its brethren; the 360, 602, 902, etc. |

The new 350 and 650 from Sony don't have that problem, since the touch interface is no longer touch, but IR detectors in the bezel of the reader. Works great btw ;-) The PB 903 uses a wacom touch interface (that sits beneath the eInk) , so working with a special 'pen'. The IQ has a 'normal' touch screen, just like any android smartphone.. So as long if you resist the temptation to buy price friendly older equipment you should not have trouble with glare. Erm the IPad is also terrible with glare (not to say any form of bright light). about wacom you have to consider that some time there is even a protective layer over the screen.. so I would not be so sure about glare.. |

IR touchscreens are actually one of the oldest technologies for touchscreens around. They basically take the photointerruptor - you know, shining a beam into a sensor - and extend it to two linear sets, one vertical and one horizontal. It works with any sufficiently large and IR opaque object, including fingers and (not too thin) stylus, but cannot do multitouch as (generally) two touched points show up as four interruptions - with four possible touches sensed.
The protective layers on the screen are not just sometimes there - screens are fragile. But with resistive touchscreens you have multiple layers, mechanically separated, the topmost of which move. With inductive digitizers none of the layers on top of the screen are involved in the sensor. |
