Yes. Simply open the Styles pane and then under OPTIONS change ti to "styles in use" or "in current document," and you will eliminate all the styles you're NOT using. Moreover, in that same pane, you can determine which types of styles you wish to see. And the sort order--alphabetical, etc.

In INDD, the styles pane is not as easy to use and unlike Word, dammit, you can't simply print out a sheet of CSS, so that you can see what's what. But it's simply in the paragraph styles panel, that's all.

Hmmm...looks like it can't really be customized, then. Perhaps if I just get creative with naming, I can make an alphabetical sort work.
