Does the Sony Reader support Chinese directly out of the box? Do you need to specially format the ebook files (embed the fonts, etc.)? Thanks.

You have to embed the fonts in the document - at least that's by far the easiest way to do it.

If you've downloaded books that end in .zip, did you unzip then first to get the .LRF file out of the .zip file? .zip is a compression format and in the case of the books, will contain the .LRF that is the book.

If you have the .LRF already and it's not a case of having to unzip, then what exactly are you doing? We need more info so we can try to help.

I heard that the Sony Reader has really bad support for Chinese. It can only display Chinese characters in embedded PDFs, but it does a very poor job of it. It can't display book titles and authors in Chinese either. It looks like Sony never tried to make the reader support multiple languages.

Someone did hack into the firmware to make the reader support Chinese. The description of how to do that (written in Chinese) is here:

We got a whole solution to get perfect Chinese support for Sony Reader

http://www.hi-pda.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=361320

All these Chinese BBeB books are non-font-embeded, it may need to flash Chinese fonts into Reader, and all these books could be readable.

Thank you so much for all the post here.

I am new and I don't understand much about Sony Reader. Here is some information I collected so that Sony Reader can display Chinese. Thanks everyone!

I've removed that link, as the site looks suspiciously like a sharing point for ... less than legitimate texts, and is therefore in conflict with MobileRead's policy on those matters.

Please don't repost it, or any others like it.
