Thumbs up NEXUS 7 gains UNLIMITED STORAGE via USB memory sticks/cards **NO ROOTING** involved

As always i have been sifting through the Internet to come up the most useful Apps to unlock the true potential of the NEXUS 7.

As with all my finds i like to share them on mobile read so every nexus owner benefits and this time i think i have found the most important App to be released on the NEXUS 7 so far.

If you want to check out my other Apps then take a look here-
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...=184704&page=3

Connecting: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hnBApLGiljA
V2 Features: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eCgvmvzqWAQ

I give you the Nexus Media Importer (pice £1.29 /$1.99)

https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...importer&hl=en

In one fell swoop this App allows you to stream movies ,photos and music from both USB memory sticks or memory card readers ++ PORTABLE HD ( all must be formated in FAT16/32 )via a VERY CHEAP OTG cable WITHOUT ROOTING.

This App also allows you to copy over from a memory stick, files so it will be very handy for -example taking photos with you camera and then transferring them to your nexus 7 without having to use a PC.

This is the FIRST App to do this, where as STICKMOUNT requires the owner too root there nexus 7 which invalidates the warranty of the device.

Nexus Media Importer only cost a PALTRY £1.39 / $1.99
I consider this a must have App for any serous nexus 7 owner to have and give it the darksaber thumbs up

P.S. iM currently testing out on a number of USB memory stick including my 64GB SANDISK ULTRA,TOSHIBA 4GB & SANDISK 16GB SLICE and there all working as should.

So with the included 13gb of USABLE memory on my tablet + the 60GB of USABLE storage on my ULTRA 64GB i have more than enough storage to last for a long time WITHOUT access to my PC.

Reads powered hard drives and flash drives!

Must have app for nexus 7, reads powered hard drives and flash drives! Works fine with Flash drive & powered hard disk! pdf doc photos videos without rooting. You buy a good otg adapter as some cheap ones do not connect correctly. My Samsung galaxy note official otg cable connected perfect but another cheap otg cable has issues. So buy good otg cable and don't blame app. It works perfectly with official Samsung galaxy note otg cable. No problems reading, streaming or copying pdf, doc or photos or videos

Lindy - August 28, 2012 - Asus Nexus 7 with version 2.0.4.1
Awesome!

Even streamed a movie off a portable USB 3 hard drive powered by the tablet. Good way to drain the battery but you can copy to the nexus 7 anyway. Brilliant!

Vivienne - August 27, 2012 - Asus Nexus 7 with version 2.0.4.1
good for value

this app has made the restricted 16gb nexus more flexible. videos and songs stream instantly without having to transfer the files onto the device, however i have found that pdf files need to be transferred onto the device for it to be opened, hence the 1 star reduction. as a student, i wanted to use my pad and this app for lecture reading on the go, hopefully future updates of this app will include the ability to allow me to do just this. this is a solid app, worth the money.

Nexus 7

Works perfectly with an USB flash drive pen, for playing movies. A must have app.

Graham - August 24, 2012 - Asus Nexus 7 with version 2.0.4.1
Fantastic

This is a must have app! Simple and powerful interface. Great support! My Nexus 7 is now so much more than it was.

Robert - August 26, 2012 - Asus Nexus 7 with version 2.0.4.1
Works on Nexus 7- flash drive for Photos

I was going to root when I saw the review on Amazon. Purchased a $2 OTG cable from ebay and connected with 4gb Dane flash. Will try a video soon and reevaluate. This should be included with the tablet purchase. This was $2 well-spent and persuaded me from returning the tablet .

Tina - August 28, 2012 - Version 2.0.4.1
So glad I found this!

I was going to root my nexus 7 but was kinda nervous about it. I just wanted to be able to watch movies when traveling. I am not the kind of person who would "flash a new ROM" (at least I think that is the phrase I saw) This worked perfectly with the OTG cable I bought from ebay.

Aui - August 28, 2012 - Asus Nexus 7 with version 2.0.4.1
Thanks

Seriously, I think all nexus 7 owner must thank you for this . You sir , is a hero.

Great! The reason I dismissed the Nexus is its lack of SD-slots.
now all I have to do is convince myself I absolutely need a Nexus, beside my note and Ipad2, but I'll succeed, al it takes is greed and perseverance.

The Eagle has landed - VERSION 3.0 Nexus Media Importer

https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...importer&hl=en

You may not know this but google handed out 7000 nexus 7 tablets for FREE to App developers to help boost development of more Apps for android ,and it's paying off already.

The developer has been working night and day to improve this App even more and it now supports NTFS -formatted memory cards and PORTABLE HARD DRIVES

It can also display Folders on your storage device which is another big improvement,as fell as play VOB files(files u find on DVD )This App also has another feather in it's cap as it can be also used with mobile phones and tablets that have Android 3.2+ . Examples -include Galaxy Nexus,Motorola Xoom so they can expand there storage just like the nexus 7.

I personally tested this NEW version out by connecting my SAMSUNG 500GB external HD to my Nexus 7 which is formatted in NTFS and it works great.

Nexus Media Importer allows you to import and stream music, video, photos and documents from a USB flash drive or SD card connected to your Nexus 7, Galaxy Nexus, or other Android 3.2+ devices with USB Host support. This is the only non-root solution for devices that do not provide native support for external flash storage. Requires the following hardware:

1) An Android 3.2+ device. Examples include Google Nexus devices or the Motorola Xoom.
2) A USB OTG (On-The-Go) cable. Cost approximately $1 USD on Amazon), see screenshots for examples.
3) A USB Flash Drive or USB SD Card Reader and SD Card, see screen shots for examples.

To use:
-If you are using an SD card reader, put the card in the reader first.
-Attach the OTG cable to the Nexus or other device.
-Attach your USB device to the OTG cable.
-The application will launch automatically.
-Select the file. The selected file's path appears in the preview window (currently only photos show preview).
-Click the play icon to stream or the save (disk) icon
-If save is successful, you can click the download notification to view it or see it in the Downloads app.

Technical Notes:

-DOES NOT REQUIRE ROOT!
-The USB drive/flash card must be formatted as FAT16, FAT32 or NTFS (currently no exFAT or extN support). FAT & NTFS are the most common formats for SD and USB Drives.
-Read Only. You can not write to the attached device, only copy to the Android device.
-This a media streamer and file copy utility. It requires third party software to view multimedia content and read documents. Many formats are supported directly by Android, but other are not. In particular, "MKV", "AVI" and most doc. types require additional software. There are many excellent free and paid apps. in the Play market. For example: http://play.google.com/store/apps/de...spandroid.free

I cannot reply to reviews/comments. If you have an issue, please contact me by clicking "Email Developer". I will do my best resolve your issue. When in doubt, try the free "Nexus Photo Viewer". It could save me a bad review and you some cash!

Why does Nexus Media Importer not work for Nexus S? Was there something with a crippled USB port?

I dont honestly know if it does or does not work mate, you would be better off contacting the developer or making a purchase and testing it out for yourself as it's so cheap.

A OTG +App will set you back less than $4 so it's not a big gamble to make.

This is the guys email if you want to ask him anything

Oh, I have bought it for my Nexus 7 but was not allowed to download it to my Nexus S. Now found:

which lists Nexus S as not working.

Interesting questions,i did wonder about that myself but never bothered to do a search until today and it seems there are MICRO usb sticks on sale. But they seem limited in size and variety of manufactures. Also the price per GB seems a bit high as i purchased a 64GB Sandisk ULTRA for £30 and these 8GB cost -£5.85 for 8GB

8 of these x 8= 64gb =£46.80

Verbatim 8GB Micro USB Flash Drive
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Verbatim-440.../dp/B0030M5NFC

Amazon reviews

smallest USB drive i have ever seen, means you can always carry it with you on your keys... and seems very durable, due to it not having the metal sheild around the connection like most usb's, previously i have experienced these things get bend and no longer fit the computer.

product is brilliant value for money!

What can I say, I love the thing. I bought a sandisk titanium a year or two ago, knowing that it was indestructible and I couldn't break it. Alas after a measly 6 months i dropped it, and although it remained intact, the data had corrupted. We've all been there, loosing something important because 'something' happened to the usb stick and it has stopped working. Well this little thing stays on my car keys, gets bashed about, thrown across the room, and after all of that it hasn't let me down yet. Not to mention how tiny it is, it certainly impresses anyone who sees me use it.
The only downside is that it has to be inserted into most usb sockets upside down. But I can live with that.
Its a great little thing, hard to break, portable and 16gb is HUGE. Very impressed.
