Kobo Now Listing File Type and DRM
I noticed tonight that under Product Information is an item titled Download Options where it lists the file type and if it is DRM protected.
I believe this is new, I haven't noticed it before and I visit the site several times a day. |

That does look new! I'm seeing "Download options: EPUB2 (Adobe DRM)" on one random book - but no line in that spot at all on a book which I know doesn't have an ADE EPUB download. Which is a shame, because giving no information isn't really a great substitute for noting clearly that there ISN'T an epub download option.

Books are also being designated as PDF (Adobe DRM) and Epub2 (DRM Free).
I guess that only leaves Epub3. Last edited by Cosimo; 11-20-2014 at 01:59 AM. Reason: added additional info |

Well, that's a step in the right direction, at least.

Finally some 15 months or so after they removed that info they've put it back.
I can't understand why it took them that long. |

It IS a step in the right direction at least. I can see the EPUB2 in the Product Info. Known kepub-only books seem to be missing the "Download options" section (which makes sense, but is less than optimal). This saves a little time from having to add the preview to my library to determine if it's a standard Adobe epub. But having the "eREADERS" icon on kepub-only ebooks in the "READ THIS ON" section is still a bit misleading and/or disingenuous. It should say KOBO eREADERS

Nice.
It's a shame the prices on the books I looked at seemed to have gone up since I last checked, but you can't have everything. |

Well look at that. I wonder how many complaints and refund requests it took for them to finally do this.

I'm also seeing Download options: EPUB2 (DRM-Free) for DRM free books on the Canadian site. And above the "read this on" device pictograms it does say "You can read this item using any of the following Kobo apps and devices:" so I'd say they're okay with regards to the eReader icon not specifying Kobo readers only.

Very happy to see this! Are customer reviews new too? Or am I just now noticing them?
The Harry Potter books also say "Download options: EPUB2 (DRM-Free)." Which is true just not from the Kobo website. But I suppose you don't actually buy them from Kobo either. |

That information has been there for a considerable time on their Japanese site. Why it took them so long to propagate it elsewhere is anybody's guess (as it's fairly obviously-useful information that they already had the code for).
Oddly enough, this information is not however available on their New Zealand site (at least not yet). Even stranger, it appears that the back-end of the US & NZ sites are identical (with http://store.kobobooks.com/en-US/ebo...vated-by-you-1 yielding the exact same results as http://store.kobobooks.com/en-NZ/ebo...vated-by-you-1) and the download-options-given available-only-to-US book being distinguished from the download-options-hidden available-only-to-NZ book by a suffix (http://store.kobobooks.com/en-US/ebo...vated-by-you-1 versus http://store.kobobooks.com/en-US/ebo...vated-by-you-2). NZ is on the new checkout unless, and except, if you are using IE9 or some other browsers or certain tablets etc, in which case it will be the old look site and checkout. |
