Seriously, it's fairly short and easy to read. As dense as some of Forster's fiction can be, as easily accessible is he when he talks a about books and reading and writing.

Well. It is quite lascivious. Very little is left to imagination. The Dragon is an heir of the Titans, his singular organ, and it is not the nose, is compared to a sheep head, in one instance, and used as board to throw dice in an other. Good for adolescent reading before ... Mary Quaint. Elegant though. The English is pure music. Just from memory.

But does that mean the book is any good?

The movie has one of the best early Donald Sutherland. Not as in Mash, nor in Klute, but quite sexy. Steel eyed HawkEye strikes again.
The book has marked an epoch. I remember the emotions and thrills it gave me when I read it in its time. But, it is one of the few spy, action thrillers and alike that I have not reread.

This months nominations have given me a great many book tips. My TBR list is once again increasing. Can't wait for the poll, not sure which one I'll end up voting for.

I am putting up the info, but I am not proposing it yet.

Modesty Blaise is the title of an action-adventure/spy fiction novel by Peter O'Donnell which was first published in 1965, featuring the character Modesty Blaise which O'Donnell had created for a comic strip in 1963.
This was the first novel to feature the character of Modesty Blaise and her right-hand-man, Willie Garvin, and the series of books (all written by O'Donnell) ran concurrently with the comic strip until 1996 (the comic strip ran until 2001).
Technically, this is a novelisation of a screenplay O'Donnell wrote based upon the character, although it predated the film release by a year. The filmed version of the screenplay bore little resemblance to O'Donnell's original (the author was often quoted as saying only a single, inconsequential, line of dialogue remained from his original script). Although the 1966 film version of Modesty Blaise was not a critical success, the book proved popular with fans of both the comic strip and readers of spy fiction (Blaise was promoted on the cover of the first American edition by Doubleday as the feminine answer to James Bond), and O'Donnell followed up with 10 more novels and two short story collections over the next 30 years.

I remember Modesty Blaise (what a name!) from news paper comics I read a the home of some of my great aunts whom we visited when I was a child. Later on I have also read some of the comics. All good - she is a wonderful heroine. I didn't know there were books as well.

There are about 10 of them and all very nice. The fastest pace, packed with action. No nonsense stuff. Down and then up. In funny Italy the comics never arrived, but the books were big hits. I might still have some hidden somewhere in the grange. Let me find them, then I will think of something.

Heroins are not easy to find, except of course your not beloved Larson, the Swedish one. You could read a synopsis of the first two and go directly to third. For me the best of the 3. I reread it twice already.

No, interesting heroines are as rare as gold dust.
For myself I very much enjoy the heroines of the novels of Judith Merkle Riley. An unusual and lovely combination of innocence and intelligence.

And as you mention, Lisbeth Salander is one of the great ones, too.
