Is the Internet Running Out of Space?
While it seems limitless, Sean Silverthorne interviews Benjamin G. Edelman about the current problems with IP addresses and their almost exhausted supply under IPv4 in a recent HBS Working Knowledge piece on Research and Knowledge titled When the Internet Runs Out of IP Addresses While the future move to IPv6 will add trillions of new addresses, the road from here to there may be a bumpy one.
I found it an interesting interview and it touched on a problem that I had never thought of before. |

it had to happen sometime...
in france we used to have 8 digit telephone numbers. about 10 years ago they ran out of new numbers so they added a 2-digit geographical prefixe to make more. of course before the 8 digit numbers they were even shorter. i imagine with all the cell-phones (some people have more than one) we'll eventually end up with 20 digit or more telephone numbers... thank goodness for speed dial ! meanwhile, here is what happens when you run out of ip addresses. |

When I was a kid our telephone number was an exchange with four digits (Diamond 4888) and by 1960 this had grown to seven digits. Now we use a three digit prefix called an area code giving us a ten digit number.

PRospect 7-3497 And, on some older movies, they just ask for "457" or something like that. |

I can remember 867-5309...
I personally don't think there is going to be transition problems, at least not to the masses. There are plenty of ways this is already going on, simple encapsulation, etc. However to admins and techs it can be a pain... -MJ Oh, and Transilvania 65000 |

Our first phone number wasn't a phone number. There were only names. There was no dial on the phone of any kind. You just picked up the receiver and the local operator on duty would say hello to you by name and asked you WHO you wanted to talk to, not what number you wanted. We had "party lines" for awhile also - talk about GOSSIP!
Wait - this has nothing to do with the internet running out of space. Just blowin' with the wind here. Sorry . . . carry on. |
