Why didn't they use the pirate versions?

Apparently all his official ebooks are this bad. You would think they would at least proof the first chapter just to sucker people into paying £5 each for them. |

They probably think people will put up with it.

the irony that pirates have more respect for the works than the people that theyre "stealing" it from is astounding. damn pirates putting out cleaned up and properly edited books. nuts to them!

I certainly hope that reviewer left a similar note on the publisher's website (where it might actually do some good).

Quite interesting really - it surely means no-one at the publishers actually read the thing before deciding to sell it.
Ah, the pressures of top management. It's why they need to be paid so much, and have such nice pensions so they can recover from the strain of years of executive oversight....... rant over.... |

Ouch!
I keep expecting one of my free ebooks to show up edited and proofread. And maybe changed to reflect the tastes of the reader.

From previous threads, the publisher's mindset is likely that once they decide to correct the pure [innocently-adulterated] OCR output, they're committed to a full re-edit of the entire work, and such an undertaking probably wouldn't be cost effective.
So I guess the honest solution is to buy the crappy OCR version and pirate the cleaned-up torrent version! |

Sadly, I think you'll find that most pirated versions these days are just de-DRM'd copies of the crappy OCR versions. And that the supply of fan-created e-books that the big 3 sites don't carry (but which are still under copyright) has pretty much dried up.

Why put "stealing" in quotes. It's almost like you don't believe that the pirates are actually stealing.

[QUOTE=DiapDealer;1840325]I did at first, but then I figured that loveposting was somehow trying to shift the blame to retailers rather than the publishers... where it belongs.
Note the "Marketers" vs "publishers" Still pretty weird all in all, though. [/QUOTE I used "publishers" sort of generically, to include the money men. I agree the retailers are just as stupid, but in a different feeding chain ? P'raps he/she needed an "either" after "market it"..? Dunno 'bout the "one" though... |

According to this thread, this isn't the only Gollanz SF Gateway book to have OCR errors.
OCR Errors The Stainless Steel Rat Wants You - Harry Harrison A Stainless Steel Rat Is Born - Harry Harrison The Shadow of Heaven- Bob Shaw One Million Tomorrows - Bob Shaw's OK Night Walk - Bob Shaw's Hmm. I am not impressed. |
