I 100% agree. I also feel that if they are going to meatgrind, use the ePub as the source. It will make a much better set of other formats then starting with a Word document. No matter how you follow the guide, you'll till get a mess.
But what I think Smashwords should do is allow all the formats to be uploaded but make ePub a mandatory upload. That way if any formats are not uploaded, they get made from the ePub. Simple really and a lot nicer solution. |

Users also need to flood Mark as well. I'm tired of downloading an eBook and finding it's not right and then having to wade through the muck that a Word conversion made just to fix things.

With Smashwords earlier this year I just wanted to see if I could publish my book via another channel to reach more readers. |

Creating an ePub is not that hard, especially is you use Sigil. From what I read and see, Smashword generated a lot of garbage code and let you solve it yourself. Reader will not be that happy if it doesn't look good.
If you want reasonably good code, convert the word document with Atlantis Word Processor. You can test it out before you want to buy. However, it is your choice. |

Microsoft Word is an abomination and should never have seen the light of day.
