QT 4.8 and Sigil
So, Qt 4.8 and an accompanying new version of QtWebKit have reached the release candidate stage. Can anyone tell me whether this new release does in fact mean that Sigil can have proper font support now?

You will have to look at the changelog or upstream bug to answer your question.

I lack the relevant expertise. Supposedly there's a new QtRawFont API, but I don't know whether that actually suits Sigil's needs or not. I'm a lawyer; not a computer scientist.

Hey, at least we'll get better quality resizes in the book view - it now supports hinting and defaults higher than nearest-neighbor

At any rate, I guess the work is done and it's just a matter of waiting for it to be ready. So hooray!

Okay, I did some research on this more recently and it looks like we may be waiting a while longer. I'll go ahead and summarize what I found for the benefit of other non-programmers who are also waiting on the same thing.
Apparently the QtWebKit component is a port of the original WebKit to Qt, and is generally released alongside it but is semi-separate. Right now Qt 4.8 has the QRawFont API that Sigil could use to get font support working, but QtWebKit hasn't put out an update that includes use of the API, so there's nothing for Sigil to use yet. Right now, it seems as though the QtWebKit team is focusing on QtWebKit2 (not the same thing as QtWebKit 2.0, which is confusing) which is meant to go out with Qt 5.0. So, apparently the answer to "when can this stuff get integrated into Sigil" is "when Qt 5.0 hits." Of course, exactly how much work moving Sigil to using Qt 5.0 (apparently it's a big leap forward) will be, I don't know, and the answer could very well be "lots." |
