What VM software are you using. Microsoft VPC and VirualBox (free version) do not support USB devices. Try VMWare if you are using one of these other ones. It supports USB.

If you are using Windows Virtual PC (Win7 add-on) I'm not sure what's up it is supposed to support USB port virtualization.

In both cases you usually have to specify what USB device you want to mount onto the guest machine... once you do that it is no longer available on the host machine.

Thanks, Bob... I'm on VMware, so I'll give it a shot. But generally USB devices seem to cause issue with my VMs.

Ideally, I would like this to work on Windows... Even more ideally, I would like my work to run Linux so I'd never have to mess with MS.

Hi
I really like your small script, it works pretty fine on my Sony 600 with Linux and PDFs.

I would just like to know whether you mad already any advances concerning zoom levels and annotation replacement.
As far as I tested it, annotations are shown even when they have been made in zoom mode. Unfortunately they are afterwards shifted.

I have to correct lots of rapports and the little Sony would be (or already is) perfect for it. The only drawback is the fact that my writing in the documents becomes huge if I do it in the original scale.

Cheers

BTW: Wrong thread, but related to it. I fail importing word documents with calibre - doesnt it work out of the box ?

Red face prs-600 notes to printing

I bought an e-book reader (PRS-600) thinking that I could highlight text sections, and export them (along with the page numbers) to facilitate research. You cant export anything, nor print anything. I assume that the development focus has been on uber copyright protection with an assumption that buyers will all be reading books they have to pay for. This is a serious drawback for students and researchers.

Thanks

FYI, the script does indeed only work for fully zoomed out annotations. Each "Freehand" annotation is associated with a specific zoom level (specified in its XML tag by the scale="0|1|2|3|4" attribute. Unzoomed is scale="0")

Annotations made on one zoom level do not show on another zoom level (when viewing on the reader itself).

I've made all my annotations under the "L" zoom size (scale="2") so they are obviously misplaced in the jarnal files created. My eyes aren't good enough to make the annotations on the unzoomed in files; so, I think I'm back to the drawing board on a good way to export notes from the Reader still.

How silly.
Hi I am still not willed to give up the annotations problem - it is essential for my purpose. I just went through the entire thread again and found this line, that made me wonder.
If it is true that all annotations are as well marked with the actual zoom level (I cant check it at the moment, sent mine back due to fading) we could recover them as well in the annotations export script.
The script "just" would have to read out the zooming mode (1/2/3 or 4) and then figure out the percentage in zooming (for example. in percent). Knowing the actual displacement we could recalculate the position in non-zoomed mode.
Since we have only few zooming modes it would be probably not such an issue.

What do you think guys ?

Hi! I am a newbie with same problem on Windows and I "prefer" bad English (sorry!).

To Q1: The problem "syntax error" by using the "print" command is really easy to solve: You (and I at first) installed the version 3.1, but 2.6 is right (there was a syntax change in Python 3.1, print command afforts parentheses now). So I've gone a little bit further, but haven't finished yet.

To Q2: Maybe you avoid USB-problem of virtual machines by copying whole intent of reader or memory card to a common directory? (so did I)

Bye

Hi
I am still trying to figure out more - unfortunately I have little experience so far.

@cedricp: Could you please just confirm what I think I "figured" out so far and probably help me a little bit ?

Regarding the *.pdf.annot files I think that the line:

<sony:item name="identifier" value="prsID.2.freehandMarkup:1-0-0-0" />

Includes as well the zoom level.
If I did multiple freehand annotations with different zoom modes I received following marks:

Without zoom:
<sony:item name="identifier" value="prsID.2.freehandMarkup:1-0-0-0" />

With 1x zoom:
<sony:item name="identifier" value="prsID.2.freehandMarkup:0-0-0-1" />

With 2x zoom:
<sony:item name="identifier" value="prsID.2.freehandMarkup:1-0-0-2" />

I guess the last number represents the zoom level and not anything related to the page number (if I made another annotation at the end of this trial with no zoom I receiver again 1-0-0-0).
I have no idea what represents the first number

Does anybody have an idea how much each zoom mode changes (in percent) ?

In the reader on Database/Media/Notepads, there are several files with .note extensions that I assume are my notes. And I can copy them to the PC. So if that's them, I have the 'get them out" part ok. But how do I read them? Particularly since Sony Reader Library software doesn't work at all on my PC.

Steve
Hi, I guess you already figured it out by now. But in case anybody else wonders as well. The files are located in
/READER/database/media/notepads/ and are actually just *.svg files covered as *.notes files. Just open them with a svg-capable program or in case it wouldnt work, just rename it in example.svg

Hi
I hope I am not the last one out there trying to get annotations work better.
So, please try to help me.

I made a pdf-file with the following structure, to better understand the pdfloc system:

It started
1
2x
3xx
4xxx
5xxxx
6xxxxx
............

Continuing till the end of the document until 49xxx.....

So, I made an ascending system where every line the line number should be +1
and the marked area should be ascending by one as well.
Please have a look, I attached the files (test2.pdf and test2.pdf.annot).
To easier analyze it I already cleared the annot file and removed everything except the
pdfloc line)

I will try to understand the system, but every help is very welcome!

File Type: zip test.zip (14.7 KB, 380 views)

I've not had much luck renaming .notes files to .svg only Chrome seems to recognize them.

Inkscape and Adobe Illustrator both rejected them.

Hi
Unfortunately you seem to be right. I can reproduce that.
Alternatively GIMP (http://www.gimp.org/) can open and convert it (is Freeware as well).

Good morning

I will continue a little bit my monologue.
I figured out few things.

Concerning the pdfloc coordinates:

<fragment start="#pdfloc(3adc,0,33,0,0,0,0,1)" end="#pdfloc(3adc,0,33,0,3,0,1,1)"/>

-3adc remains the same for this document = probably format information ? (note: i made another document same style and got 370d)

- the 2nd coordinate remains as well the same = might be the page number

- the 3rd coordinate (33) represent the line number = increases every time by 8
--> It is not the number of signs (which I increased every line +1). I made another document with steady characters each line and it is as well increasing +8

- the 4th no idea

- the 5th (0 on the left, 3 on the right) seems to be the number of characters increasing by 1 every line (confirmed with steady numbers in my 2nd document).

I saw as well that the 5th remain 0 on both sides when you only would mark one letter and becomes 1 for 2 letters.

Concerning the other ones I have no clue yet

EDIT: I am not sure whether the system is based on letters or pure coordinates.
So additional information. I made the pdf document with font size 12 which means
for each x we have like 7.5 pixels verticaly and ca. 17 pixels per line of text.
So, probably the factor for each line is like 2x (8 in coordinates represents 17 pixels/2)

Hi

I just continued the work on this project a little bit.
To figure out whether the pdfloc coordinates refer to actual pixel localizations in a certain document (independent of the font, letter,....) I created another similar documents with slight changes.

New settings :

Font size: 18 instead of 12
again adding one x per line.

Results:

The second coordinate indeed represents the page

Surprisingly the lines are still increasing every line by a value +8
--> either it is font size independent (would be much easier), or it actually describes the spacing between paragraphs

Edit: I made another test with increased spacing and the numbers still increased by 8!!

The number per letter is again increasing by (x-1)+1
--> Since I found the same for a much smaller font size, it indicates that the pdfloc indeed describe the number of letters independent of their size !

Summary:
We know for the coordinates, that the
2nd is the page
3rd is the line increasing by 8 (1st line is 9)
5th is the number of letters increasing by 1 (beginning from 2 letter =1)
last indicating end of the mark? at least it is 0 for the start coordinates and 1 for the end

Note: I tried as well to mark over two lines (same system: increasing the x`s per line) and found that it does NOT add any additional information, just the start and end letter coordinate

It seems Sony finally listened! It seems the new v3.2 software can export highlighted text without character limit

Wow, that sounds promising.
Just a question since I am working here with Linux, how is the export actually working ? Are you able to export for example a new pdf with annotations or is it only possible to check the annotations in the Sony software.

Probably weired question, but I tried only once briefly on a friends PC and I was only able to see annotations in the sony software - what somehow is not a export for me at all......

PS:*Sorry by the way for not continuing the work on the pdfloc at the moment. It turned out to become really confusing when you actually take pdfs with pictures, multiple columns ,....

I will try to get it done but would really appreciate some help
