Mobileread/Amazon dust up hits PC World

There is a really nice article from PC World that covers Amazon's demand that Mobileread remove any references to kindlepid.py

PC World article

Go visit the article and press the Digg button.

Interesting article. Wonder how long itll be and if itll be before amazon either finds a fix to prevent the program or finds a way to get the program off the net.

Once something like this is in the wild there is no getting it off the net.

digg done

I would be nice if there were more comments on the article from Kindle users expressing their disappointment with Amazon.

apple managed to for a long while with programs that took music from ipod and put it on comp. Eventually they lost that battle, but it took a long time for them to lose it.

It's spreading! A search on Google.News and Yahoo.News shows similar articles on Slashdot, TechSpot, Techdirt, Register, PC World, Macworld, and Engadget. None of them, or the comments posted by site visitors, is favorable to Amazon's actions.

I'm surprised it took Amazon this long to figure out that the script was posted on this site, that thread has been there for a long time.

My guess is that they've known about it all along, but its more the fear of it being misused by those purchasing via their iPhone that prompted the action (as opposed to Kindle owners using it to get other content on their Kindles).

I found the article extremely interesting, especially where they linked to the MR post that shows the letter sent. Either I'm just a dumb engineer or their lawyer screwed up.

From the letter MR is to remove all ANTI-circumvention ... MR, to my knowledge, has never had any ANTI-circumvention anything and what Amazon was accusing MR of having was CIRCUMVENTION scripts;

Maybe a lawyer should look at it.

DMCA includes "anti-circumvention provisions" (Wiki: Anti-circumvention), so the letter starts out correctly but then falls down on "anti-circumvention tools" (as you say, should be circumvention tools).

There are people from Amazon who lurk here. They've known about for a long time.

But isn't the responsibility of the rights holder i.e. mobipocket or the publishers to defend their copyrights under the DMCA? Amazon's encryption isn't being broken or circumvented here so does Amazon actually have a DMCA claim. If this is an issue, shouldn't mobipocket or the publishers be the ones issuing the take down notices?

Some comment on Engadget was positive and accused MobileRead of wanting to sell more or their own stuff...
