Can we get a list then of what's up for January?
No, we shouldn't list Storm Front twice and since it was 2nd place twice, we'll just have to do with one less book to vote on. |

Looks like we need yet another vote since this one was a tie.

Since this vote has ended in a tie, do you cast the tiebreaker, Tom?

Either solution sounds good to the Storm Front “either one less nomination or use a third place finish” question.
I looked at Elfwreck's selections list, and the other runner-up months were December 2009 and January 2011, so this is the first year we'll have a runner-up category the previous year to a runner-up category, so whatever is decided now will set the precedent. As Hamlet53 said, it would seem a bit of a zombie book if we used it. Our motto could be: No runner-up of the runner-up for the runner-up! Also, looking at Elfwreck's list, I noticed that this club has already chosen 1984 before in August 2009! Oddly, apparently no one stopped it from being nominated and making it all the way to second place for May 2011 even though we have a rule against nominating books already selected. (maybe Jon was too busy preparing to be worried about A Passage To India to notice?) So, wouldn’t that eliminate 1984 from being used? If so, we could either just not use one from that month or use the third place - that would be "Riders of the Purple Sage". For those interested, the winner got 23 votes while 1984 got 22, and third-place Purple Sage got 8. In fact, looking at that month, our most exciting vote of the year, I am amazed that 1984 was in the horserace to win, and kept going back and forth for the lead with Anna Karenina over and over (which inspired pages and pages of discussion and a closely watched race), and yet no one noticed that it had already been chosen before! Though, we didn't have the list to refer to then. |

You are correct. Since 1984 was already a winner, it can't be a winner again.

So here's the deal for the January vote:
The Runner Up category includes the past 11 months (Feb.-Dec.) 1984 by George Orwell (May's runner-up) is DISQUALIFIED because it was the August 2009 Mobile Read Book Club Vote winner. Storm Front came in second in two months. That leaves us with 9 selections: 1. (Feb) Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen 2. (Mar) Orthodoxy by GK Chesterton 3. (Apr) A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole 4. (Jun) The Spy Who Came in from the Cold by John le Carré 5. (Jul) A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin 6. (Aug) Black Rain by Masuji Ibuse 7. (Sep/Oct) Storm Front by Jim Butcher 8. (Nov) Hyperion by Dan Simmons 9. (Dec) Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov |

Looking at the list, I realised that if we end up with tiered voting, and if the voting went just so next month, then we could end up with our first head-to-head vote being Storm Front vs Lolita! How's that for starting things off with a bang? |

You just made the best possible case for not having tiered voting.
