Where can I read Hoffmann's The Nutcracker and the Mouse King?
..for free?
Would this be considered public domain by now? Or is that only the original German text? |

I guess the German original is in the public domain as the book was first printed in 1816 and the author died in 1822.
The copyright status of an English translation depends on when it was printed and your country of origin, but a safe bet is that if the translation was printed before 1923, then it is also in the public domain. If you want to read the book in English for free, then Google is your best friend. |

There's a Penguin Classics edition (with both stories in) available as a commercial eBook.
