Intro

Hi, I am an avid reader, and recently took the plunge and bought an e-reader, after many hours of research, which ultimately told me we are at the beta stage of e-books, I decided on the Sony PRS 700. I know very little about where to purchase the best books for value, and which formats to focus on. It seems pdf is the way to go. Can anyone help and give me some advise.
Thanks

Welcome to Mobileread!

I'd advise against PDF as your ebook format. Even when sized specifically for the Sony screen size (rare), you lose most of the advantages of ebooks - especially resizable fonts.

I'd advise going for ePUB (which the Sony reads natively), LRF, LIT, Mobipocket or LRX, in that order (if you're a Windows user - if not, scratch the LIT format).

DRM is the current drawback to ebooks - publishers are about where the music industry was 5 years ago - still inconveniencing only their paying customers. (DRM can be removed from ePUB, LIT and Mobipocket, but not LRX)

Fictionwise and Books-on-Board are popular sites for ebooks in general, with some specialist sites also being worth a look - Webscriptions for Sci-Fi/Fantasy and eHarlequin for romance.

There are lots of helpful users here, and lots of useful info in the wiki. Take a look around, and ask questions.

Finally, Calibre is a great ebook library program for storing, organising and doing conversions between formats. It's free, well supported, and highly recommended.

Hi bachus26 and welcome to MobileRead. The 700 is a great device. I've had a 505 for over a year and a half and really like it.

Also, don't miss all the free books for the Sony available here on MobileRead

Thanks guys, I'm getting the hang of it, the books from this site are great, and I'm beginning to track other e-books on line. Appreciate all the helpful comments and will take head and c how it goes. Much appreciated.
The 700 seems great, though the battery life doesn't seem to be anywhere near the stated length, but hey, as long as it can keep me occupied on a 16 hour flight, then I'm alright.

As long as you don't keep the built in light on, you should be getting great battery life. I get, literally, weeks on my 505. Mind you, it doesn't have a built in light and I keep the memory card out of it.

I have a Sony 505 (and a 500), and I love them both. Since neither has a built-in light, the battery charge lasts a loooonng time, and I do have memory cards in them.

Welcome to MobileRead, bachus26!

I have had my 700 since Christmas and love it. I am sure you will easily get 16 hours of reading out of a battery charge. I read a lot and only really need to recharge about once a week and I do leave the memory stick in frequently. I usually convert books to the lrf format using Calibre and load the books onto my reader from Ebook Library (after uploading them from Calibre) but I know you can load them on your reader from Calibre, too. Good Luck and Happy Reading.

That is good to know, i've downloaded a bunch of books on the reader now, and am slowly getting comfortable w/ the whole process. I'll keep in mind to turn the light off, and try to avoid leaving the sd card in. Thank you all for ur help, it does make my life a lot easier, and my back less strained w/ all the traveling that i do. I'm sure over time, the machines will become more powerful, give many more options, like colour etc, and we, the users, will spend much more money on them, but if they make our lives easier and more interesting, then all is good.

Hi,

I have a 505 and LOVE it! I'm fairly new to ebooks and ereaders myself, but I love my 505 more and more everytime I read it. One of my favorite things about the Sony (as opposed to others) is that you can check out ebooks FOR FREE from the library, if they have an ebook collection. I read alot of current bestsellers and romance fiction, so this was the perfect choice for me.
