PRS-500 Update Path?
I just came across this August news release from Sony claiming that they "will also provide an update path for owners of the first edition Reader, model PRS-500, so early adopters of the Reader will be able to enjoy this benefit as well" (http://news.prnewswire.com/DisplayRe...5076928&EDATE=). This is very exciting news, and I was wondering if anyone else had more details to add to this announcement.

Nope, folks have been waiting to hear exactly what they meant by that statement, but no word on it yet.

Knowing Sony....
Knowing Sony the "Upgrade Path" will involve us PRS-500 owners buying a newer model reader rather than Sony providing a firmware update.

Knowing Sony, the Reader would use only Sony-approved, locked format. There would be no support for any other formats and no way for the user to upload his own files.
Knowing Sony, the books would expire after some time, with no option to buy them "permanently". Knowing Sony, you would be able to buy the books only from a single shop. Knowing Sony, the software for the Reader would install a hidden rootkit to prevent any "unauthorized operations". Knowing Sony, the Reader would have only a MemoryStick slot, if any. Knowing Sony, the Reader would use separate, incompatible with anything else USB and charging cables. Something like that, hmm? |

There are, however, many people that do not follow ebook readers as long as you or me, and they need to be reminded from time to time that once upon a time there were ebook manufacturers that thought they could get away with not allowing you to put your own content on your own device. Just have a look at recent apple blunders regarding C64 emulator on iPhone. What I am going to program using an old BASIC clone inside an emulator with 64kB RAM? A skype clone? |

Well, it was a pleasant surprise. But I suspected they would actually offer an upgrade, rather than just a trade-in.
