Direct Links to Kobo Dictionaries
This thread is for direct links to Kobo dictonaries. It is also for non-Kobo dictionaries that work on the Kobo devices.

As far as I can determine, these dictionaries will work on the Touch, Glo and Mini with Post 2.1.4 firmware. There doesn't appear to be any differentiation of the dictionaries amongst the Kobo Devices.

The third post of this of this thread will contain generic installation instructions.

Kobo Release Dictionaries

The direct link for the dictionaries is : http://download.kobobooks.com/ereader/dictionaries followed by the dictionary zip file name.

These URLs are for the 2.1.5 Touch. I don't think that there are separate dictionaries for the Glo and Mini, at least the URL isn't versioned. My guess is that Kobo will make any dictionary updates without announcing it, and the Desktop will automatically sync the new version of the dictionary.

Kobo Dictionary Versions

The dictionary version info is: Version - Date - Release - Size
Where:
  • Version is an arbitrary version number.
  • Date is the internal date of the files in the zip file.
  • Release is the approx Kobo firmware release the dictionary is for.
  • Size is the size in KB from Windows Explorer.

Instructions for installing dictionaries manually

This will be fleshed out, for now this is a place holder post.



For now, here are the instructions for ShellShock's Chambers English dictionary:

Chamber's Twentieth Century Dictionary of the English Language


To use the new dictionary:
  1. Connect your Kobo to your PC.
  2. On the Kobo go to the ".kobo\dict" folder, and rename "dicthtml.zip" to "dicthtml.backup.zip". This backs up your existing English dictionary (which I assume you already have installed).
  3. Download the appropriate zip file below and unzip it to extract the dicthtml.zip file inside. Do not unzip the dicthtml.zip file.
  4. Copy the dicthtml.zip file to the ".kobo\dict" folder on the reader.
  5. Eject/disconnect your Kobo.
  6. Go into the dictionary screen, e.g., if you have a book open, tap the book icon on the bottom menu, and select Definition.
  7. Flip the language from English to e.g., Deutsch and back again. This makes the Kobo refresh the English dictionary cache. You have to do this once.
  8. The new dictionary is now ready to use.

This is another placeholder post for future use. The Direct Links to Kobo Firmware main post would have been a lot easier to manage if there were some room of future growth.

But now it is. And again a new kobo desktop release from here. Now its 3.1.3 with english-japanese dictionary inside.

It looks like Kobo released a bunch of dictionaries, as I just synced my device through Desktop, and the dictionary sync took a long time.

I installed Kobo Desktop 3.1.5 today and noticed 2 dictionaries has been updated: Japanese and Italian.

No, but if you have a Turkish -> English dictionary in StarDict format, you might want to convert it to Kobo format with Penelope.
