Apple won't replace updated ibooks

Looks like another good reason to get your ebooks from Amazon:

That is weird. I know you can delete a book and re-download it for free...why would you keep getting the old crappy version if you re-downloaded? Different ISBN?

Too true - Amazon recently sent me the updated corrected version of Ender's Game (mentioned in the article) without my asking/demanding. Amazon routinely sends out corrected versions of books that have been reformatted or extensively corrected by the publisher.

Also - O'Reilly has already updated a recent ebook purchase 4 times in the past couple of months (iPad - The Missing Manual). No charge, no hassle.

You have this same problem with Amazon - if you initiate a request to replace a defective book, you have to "return" it for a refund - and then buy the new corrected copy. Apparently your account gets "locked into" the purchased defective copy.

I don't buy iBooks, because they're tethered to iDevices. Kindle books can be read on a bunch of hardware. That's already plenty of reason for me to buy from Amazon.

well. it definitely sucks for the buyer. but think about it this way, if you buy a hardcover or paperback in the store and take it home, it's not like the publisher ships you an updated copy to your house when they revise it. i have many outdated books i've bought several times for additions that included corrections and/or additional content.

but, the book store that allows you to get updated copies for free, or a nominal price, is more likely to get my business! o'reilly media already allows you to downloaded updated copies. purchase once, have it for life. something like that.

That is totally messed up
Kudos for Amazon for refunding it for free though!

However pbooks in general don't have the number of errors present in a lot of ebooks (OCR errors and such). If the pubs would do it right the first time this wouldn't be as big of an issue for some folks. A new edition would be a different matter entirely.

I strongly suspect it's down to the fact that the iBookstore is new, and Apple don't yet have a system in place to handle this. Hopefully it will be done at some point, because it really is pretty essential for eBooks.

IMHO it's weak and it's lame, and gives me yet one more reason not to buy iBooks......

well for OCRed books, yes you're right. but for most modern publishings there is no excuse to have those types of errors when everything is. word processed anyway.
