Kindle without wi-fi
Hi All,
I was wondering if it's possible to purchace Kindle without WI-FI. If so, how? I don't mind buying one with wi-fi, and then have an official techie physicaly remove it. Is there such an option at all? If so, where can I find such a technician? Thanks a lot in advance, Omer. |

You might try just turning (and leaving) the wireless off before you opt for an elective (and possibly risky) surgery. It's cheaper and just as effective.

To answer your question.... No. You cannot buy a Kindle without wifi or have it "officially" removed

My guess would be security, since a broadcasting device can't be taken into certain kinds of areas. Non-broadcasting things with memories can be brought in (officially) and left in, but not moved in and out. <-- Gross Oversimplification.

Nope. As the others have said, you can't get a Kindle 3 without WiFi. The only option is to have or not have the optional 3G modem. That is actually a separate board fitted into a slot in the Kindle 3G+WiFi. The Kindle WiFi doesn't have the slot connector populated.
The WiFi controller is actually integrated into the Kindle board inside so can't be removed easily. One of the WiFi antennas is actually part of the main board and the other is connected to the board. I've no idea what would happen if you managed to physically disable the WiFi controller as the Kindle 3 firmware expects there to always be on there. I assume that just turning it off via software wouldn't be good enough for whatever reason you need it disabled? If you do want to go through with this then find somebody with SMD rework experience and the equipment necessary to do it without damaging the rest of the Kindle. Using a generic hot air gun isn't recommended :P You'll completely void your warranty if you do this and the Kindle may be adversely affected by the missing WiFi however. |

Kindle will not use a wifi connection unless you approve it first (assuming you are the user). But you have not stated your use case so it's not clear what to recommend.
You could get a used K2... |

Or just get any generic eBook reader without WiFi. You obviously won't have direct access to the Amazon store and you more likely than not will have to do without any major improvements in terms of firmware/additional features/support.
