I work for the US Army, (Department of the Army Civilian) and each year on Christmas and Thanksgiving, the Army Dining Facility (chow hall) puts on a spread for the single soldiers, and families of deployed soldiers.
My wife and I like to go down to the chow hall and join our men and women in uniform for Thanksgiving dinner; and perhaps, just a little, help to ease their loneliness. Trouble is, no leftovers! Oh well, I guess we can cook up a small turkey. |

I'm glad you are doing that and enjoy it. the officer corps was FORCED to go and I HATED that! I would always do a big feed the next day and have the "orphans" I was close to over. I wanted the leftovers for my family and my kids to have the memories!

TWAS THE NIGHT OF THANKSGIVING,
BUT I JUST COULDN'T SLEEP. I TRIED COUNTING BACKWARDS, I TRIED COUNTING SHEEP. THE LEFTOVERS BECKONED - THE DARK MEAT AND WHITE, BUT I FOUGHT THE TEMPTATION WITH ALL OF MY MIGHT. TOSSING AND TURNING WITH ANTICIPATION, THE THOUGHT OF A SNACK BECAME INFATUATION. SO, I RACED TO THE KITCHEN, FLUNG OPEN THE DOOR, AND GAZED AT THE FRIDGE, FULL OF GOODIES GALORE. GOBBLED UP TURKEY AND BUTTERED POTATOES, PICKLES AND CARROTS, BEANS AND TOMATOES. I FELT MYSELF SWELLING SO PLUMP AND SO ROUND, 'TIL ALL OF A SUDDEN, I ROSE OFF THE GROUND. I CRASHED THROUGH THE CEILING, FLOATING INTO THE SKY, WITH A MOUTHFUL OF PUDDING AND A HANDFUL OF PIE. BUT, I MANAGED TO YELL AS I SOARED PAST THE TREES.... HAPPY EATING TO ALL - PASS THE CRANBERRIES, PLEASE. MAY YOUR STUFFING BE TASTY, MAY YOUR TURKEY BE PLUMP. MAY YOUR POTATOES 'N GRAVY HAVE NARY A LUMP. MAY YOUR YAMS BE DELICIOUS. MAY YOUR PIES TAKE THE PRIZE, MAY YOUR THANKSGIVING DINNER STAY OFF OF YOUR THIGHS!! HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL |

Status: cornbread baked and cooling for dressing. Celery and onion crisping in ice water ready to be chopped. And so far, that's as far as I've gotten. I have to work 5 - midnight tonight, and I still haven't decided exactly when I'm cooking the turkey - tonight after I get home and set an alarm to get up and check on him, or set an alarm for earlier than normal tomorrow and get up and put him in the oven. |
