Time left in chapter/book?

Hey,
I got a kindle paper white and a kobo aura hd, and an trying to decide which one to keep
I like the kobo more I think, except for that it doesn't seem to tell you how long is left in the chapter/book, something that the kindle tells you, and a feature I find quite useful.
The odd thing is that all the reviews I found state that the kobo does tell you how much time is left. So, how do I do this? Is there a way to show you how much time is left?
Thanks,
B

At the bottom of the screen where it says "Chapter XX - Page Y of Z" tap that area and then a little bar comes up. On the left-hand side you should see "XX% done" when you tap that a larger box comes up that shows time left for the current chapter, estimated time for the next chapter AND the total time left in the book. There's also a bar graph showing the chapters by size.

Enjoy!

This depends fully on what format the book is in-

Stock ePubs won't show those stats, only so called kEpubs which are either books bought from Kobo and downloaded via WiFi from Kobo or Kobo Desktop, or books sent via calibre and the Touch extended driver-

Your problem is the difference between eBooks rendered as ePub2 books and eBooks rendered in the more advanced ePub3. Kobo eReaders come with both the Adobe Mobile Reader software which is basically an ePub2 rendering engine, and a second one developed by Kobo that implements more of the ePub3 standard.

Please someone correct me if I’m wrong but I believe you can instruct a Kobo eReader to use the Kobo rendering engine by changing the filename of the book. Assuming you’ve registered your eReader already, you download the ebook to your computer, then locate the file and change the filename like this:

Mybook.epub (original ePub2 file for use with the Adobe Mobile Reader rendering engine). Insert the text “kepub” like this: Mybook.kepub.epub This directs a Kobo eReader to use the Kobo rendering engine rather than the Adobe one.

It’s easier to buy your DRMed (copyrighted) books from Kobo.com in the first place and download them by simply syncing your Ereader. For books that do not have DRM, like the many eBooks available free here on Mobileread, changing the filename is easy, or using calibre as PeterT suggested, has more features and is more effective.

Yes a simple rename from epub to kepub.epub does force the engine to change; however, the book needs to be DRM free, and, a simple rename will not allow some featurs like bookmarks, or annotations to work.

For those to work, the book needs to have span's added throughout it, and the kobo.js file found in a true kepub added as well.

All those functions (save the DRM removal) are handled by the Kobo Touch Extended driver.

Minor nit is that the epub3 more-or-less compatible renderer is the ACCESS NetFront BookReader (see their web page at http://gl.access-company.com/products/dpub/bookreader/ for more information.) and not one that Kobo developed in-house.

Well, Jim Dovey from Kobo pretty much heads the readmium development team that ACCESS (and many other players) is a big part of. So, while the backend is ACCESS, Kobo's role in development of the epub3 bit is very real.

I always use Calibre and the plug-in so everything is in the kepub format, sorry, I made an incorrect assumption for the original poster.

Thanks to all of you. This really explains why you sometimes have to have Calibre "Convert" a book to ePub, one that is already in ePub format, to make a decent eBook out of it.

is this the same situation for mobi files that are used on the android kinfle app?

I have a couple of books not purchased from amazon, on the kindle app it shows the location and percentage complete, but will not show the time to the end of chapter of end of book.

is there a way to fix it for these files?

The covers are fine on my .epub.kepub books using 2.81 on my Aura. All of my books of this sort are on an SD card and were loaded using the extended driver with "upload covers" checked. I don't know if it is any different when the books are in main memory or if the file names are just changed without using the extended driver.

FWIW, the time remaining on sideloaded books can be very, very wrong when you begin reading. It improves as you move through the book.

Kepubs are handled in a different way to epubs. How the cover is obtained is one of the differences. For that to work properly, an extra attribute has to be added to cover image definition in the OPF file inside the book file. If you use calibre, the KoboTouchExtended driver will do this for you, plus put all the other things in that are needed for kepubs to work properly.
