Amish books

I am very intrigued by the Amish way of life. I find it fascinating.
This transpired after watching a documentary on the Amish a while ago.

Have any of you read any books that you can recommend? Fiction or non-fiction.

Thanks in advance.

I was hoping someone would weigh in with some recommendations. In case you don't know, Amish-themed romances frequently show up for free from Christian publishers, but usually just for a day or two. I religiously (pun!) download the freebies, but I have yet to read a single one. Beverly Lewis, Amy Clipston, Vannetta Chapman, and Suzanne Woods Fisher are some authors of Amish romances.

There are two mystery series set among the Amish that I've been meaning to read, one by P.L. Gaus and another by Linda Castillo. And a friend has highly recommended Jodi Picoult's Plain Truth .

Look for books by Donald Kraybill and the late John Hostetler.

If you are also interested in other Anabaptist groups, check out www.hutterites.org.

Not by the Amish, but see:

http://www2.etown.edu/amishstudies/Index.asp

I suspect authors of Amish romances know squat about the Amish. But that could be totally unfair.

EDITED: I just did a bit of googling to see if I was indeed totally unfair in my last sentence. I didn't find any smoking gun, but this seemed somewhat relevant:

http://amishamerica.com/valerie-weav...romance-novel/

Quote:
What do Amish think about Amish romance novels?

I’ve heard the whole gamut of responses from Amish people about the novels, from Amish folks who like the books to those who are critical of them. Many Amish people I’ve spoken with are aware of the books, curious and a little befuddled about why they’re so popular, but not particularly affectionate or offended by them.

I guess most Amish only read the Bible anyway to care.

There's that film with Harrison Ford - The Witness ?

How true it was to Amish life I know not, but it's mostly set in an Amish community, has a neat story line, excellent acting, and I thought it a pretty good film.
