I was afraid this would come back to the idea of separate files for the chapters.. blurg.

Now I just have to figure out how to add them all to an ebook.

That would work except for one thing... the blank lines. You style for the line putting in the graphic ornament would add a bottom margin and then you have your chapter title.
or ...
... style the <h1> tag to have a top margin. Either way its best to use a margin rather than using the antique typewriter method of inserting blank lines.

Also, some ereaders, both app and device, don't fully support styles applied to the image tag. You will likely find it more reliable to apply the style to a container (<p>or <div>) that wraps the <img> tag rather than to the <img> tag itself.

... and you need to have the <img> wrapped in a container anyway, you can't have a naked <img> directly inside <body> (well, you can, but it's does not validate)

Use Sigil. It works very well for splitting files and adding them in and letting you move them around for the proper order.

One thing I did forget was to suggest changing the <h1> to an <h2> as <h2> with it's default font size works well in most cases for a chapter title.

I agree that <h2> is more often than not the better choice for chapter titles. I reserve <h1> for use on the title page and for "Part 1", etc., in multi-part tomes that then break each part into chapters.

I have encountered the occasional work where the author's excessively verbose chapter titles are better rendered using <h3>, but these are rare.

Great info in this thread, saw the post about placing an image before a chapter heading. I had the problem as well of the image being shown on a seperate page, then the chapter title. On one ebook I made I had a small image before and after the chapter heading, and my simple way was this,

<h2 class="chapter" id="heading_id_2" title="Chapter 1"><img src="../Images/LineA.jpg" /><br />Chapter 1<br /><img src="../Images/LineB.jpg" /></h2>

I found that this held the image and the chapter title together.
In CSS my code is,

.chapter {
display: block;
font-size: 1.41667em;
font-weight: normal;
line-height: 1.3em;
margin-bottom: 1.5em;
margin-left: 0;
margin-right: 0;
margin-top: 3em;
text-align: center
}
