The notion of a beta reader is intriguing to me. I think I'll eventually be at a point where it would be nice to send my book out to someone for constructive criticism. This would be long before the editor phase. It's a YA/Fantasy/SciFi/Romance novel. I list all the options because my book has a bit of all of them mixed in. It's PG rated in that I elude to things, but other than kissing, I'm just not going there for my readers. I prefer to leave things to the imagination.
What happened with the idea of having a thread here for soliciting proofreaders? Or is this it? |

2. allude. To elude is to escape from or avoid as in eluding your pursuers. 3. this is NOT as I understand it a thread for soliciting proofreaders. This thread is more for soliciting story editors. //J |

Thanks. Perhaps I'd better elude the idea altogether as I wouldn't want to allude to anything that wasn't appropriate for the thread.

Well If you are looking for an editor, this is not the best place, but if you are looking for people to read your story and give feed back on the story, then this is the place.

Thank you for your advice. I'm not ready for editing (although obviously I'll need it). My first draft is almost complete, but I have lots to go back over before I'm ready for an editor. I was mostly looking for someone unbiased to read my book after I've gone through it a number of times and give constructive criticism. I thought this thread was for soliciting beta readers, but perhaps not. Is there a thread here on mobileread better for this or should I branch out elsewhere?

And BTW thanks for the feedback on YA. Young Adult, eh. And Adult is a euphemism for pornlike, so I suppose YA is where they call a penis a weenie? |

YA is books that deal with issues that surround YA (aka mostly teens). They are typically easier reads, and main characters are young adults facing the kinds of problems and issues a young adult faces. There is also MG which is Middle Grade. Same idea, just younger. |

I think you can find very competent beta readers at Goodreads, as well. Hitch |

Actually Hitch, would you believe I have no critique or writer's groups? I've writen 3+ books in a void, typing away on my own at home in my free time. But your question has encouraged me to branch out and look around on the web for better options. I've found and joined a great board where I'll be able to meet all my writing needs.
I posted here in the Writer's Corner because I thought it would be welcoming to new as well as published writers and that someone might point me in the right direction. Mostly I've found that's the case. I'm actually an RN (registered nurse) and have mostly been a reader rather than a writer. However, I have learned quite a bit from reading posts here at Mobileread. I've also learned that writers can be very much like nurses. We have a saying, "Nurses eat their young". Thanks again. |
